Gormely, On (May 16, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted a DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier this past weekend at the beautiful Station Creek Golf Club in Gormely, On. Juniors had to earn their scores on the weekend as they had to battle very windy conditions coming down the stretch on Sunday. Station Creek hosted golfers from across Ontario and British Colombia.

Junior Boys U19

Keaton Veillette of Toronto, ON captured the Junior Boys title at Station Creek this past weekend. With solid rounds of 74-77-151 Veillette was able to pull off the win by a single stroke. Veillette entered the final round one shot back of the first round leader. By managing the very windy conditions Veillette was able to post the best final round score in the division.

Runner up to Veillette was Logan Hawke from Oakville, ON. Hawke played in the final group with Veillette but found himself trailing by one shot once all the dust was settled. Hawke had good weekend rounds of 74-78-152.

Junior Girls U19

Joy Liu of Kitchener, ON was able to battle the windy weather conditions to capture the Junior Girls title at the DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier. Liu posted rounds of 96-102-198 which gave her a comfortable win over the rest of the field. This was Liu’s first win on the CJGA.

Liu felt the effects of the high winds early in her round but was able to adapt quickly and played accordingly throughout her back nine. When asked if any holes gave her trouble over the weekend Liu had this to say, “Sixteen, playing a shot over the water to the green is always hard”.

Gracie Halcrow from Richmond Hill, ON finished in solo second place with scores of 104-107-221.

Bantam Boys U15

Peter Blazevic of Burlington, ON was able to capture his second win in as many tournaments this past weekend at the DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier at Station Creek Golf Club. Blazevic battled the golf course and mother nature’s winds to win the division by ten strokes. Blazevic posted weekend scores of 72-76-148 to be the only player in the field to have two rounds below eighty.

“Its a great golf course, one of my favourite Clublink courses. It was overall a great golf course” said Blazevic in the clubhouse post round, “18 is always tough, especially since I couldn’t seem to put my ball in the fairway and if you cant put it in the fairway then your struggling for par and birdie”.

Beni Long from Toronto, ON finished solo second in the Bantam Boys division after weekend rounds of 78-80-158.

Bantam Girls U15

Chaewon Baek travelled across the country from Langley, BC to win the Bantam Girls division at Station Creek. Baek had clutch rounds of 72-77-149 to comfortable take the division title. Baek was able to manage the windy conditions and the long par 3’s over the weekend which help her clinch the trophy.

When asked about her feelings after the round Baek said “I feel great about my win, I just want to say thanks to my dad for this weekend”. Baek also found Station Creek to be in great condition. This was Baek’s second win on the CJGA this year.

Sarah Gallagher of Burlington, ON finished in second place with scores of 72-77-149. She was one of two players in the field to break 80 in the very tough weather conditions.

Formally known as the Junior Canada Cup, the DeLaet Cup is the only national junior Ryder Cup style event in Canada. A one-of-a-kind experience for the next generation of Canadian golfers, the Delate Cup will feature a 12-person team in a East vs West showdown. The event was developed to stretch beyond the typical stroke play format in order to provide juniors with the opportunity to test their skills in other formats, such as fourball matches, foursome matches and singles matches. Experience in these different formats serve as an excellent preparation tool for juniors, as it helps them gain exposure to different types of play and develop mental toughness.
