Richmond Hill, ON (October 4, 2015) – Clear skies greeted competitors this weekend at the final event on the CJGA Quebec schedule. Weather did play a factor in the competition, however, as high winds caused juniors to struggle on Saturday during the first round of play. Olivier Menard, Laurent Desmarchais, Rose Morissette, and Emily Romancew were able to take advantage of the calmer conditions on Sunday, claiming victory in their respective divisions.
Boys 15-19
Despite facing tough conditions in round one, three players were able to break 80. Olivier Menard of Valleyfield, QC, Sun Kim of L’ile-Perrot, QC, and Antoine Cote of Quebec City, QC shot rounds of 74, 76, and 79 respectively. With calmer conditions in the second round, Menard was able to separate himself from the rest of the field with a score of 74 (+3). With a tournament total of 148 (+6), Menard claimed his first career CJGA win by seven strokes. When asked about his win, Menard had this to say, “I am very proud of the way I played this weekend. The conditions made the course play extremely hard, and there were not many good scores. Today, I just wanted to attack every hole and try to make as many birdies as I could.” Menard is looking forward to competing in the CJGA World Junior Challenge in Palm Harbor, FL in December for his last event of the season.
Boys 14 & Under
After round one, three players found themselves tied for the lead. Logan Boucher of Beaconsfield, QC, Laurent Desmarchais of Longueuil, QC, and Frédéric Rousseau of Quebec City, QC all shot scores of 78 (+7). With six players within only four strokes of the lead, someone would need to step up on Sunday in order to claim victory. First round co-leader Laurent Desmarchais proved that he was up to the task. Desmarchais made three straight birdies from holes 10 to 12 on his way to firing a closing round 72 (+1), for a tournament total of 150 (+8). “With so many players close to the lead, my game plan today was to stay relaxed, be conservative, and make lots of pars. My approach shots were really good today, and that definitely helped me stick to my plan.” Finishing four strokes behind in second place was Frédéric Rousseau with a tournament total of 154 (+12).
Girls 15-19
Rose Morissette of Laval, QC and Dylann Armstrong of North Gower, ON found themselves co-leaders after the first round of play. Both players shot first round scores of 82 (+11). With already two victories on the season, Armstrong was surely the favourite going into Sunday. However, first-year CJGA player Rose Morissete shot a final round 84 (+13) to claim her first career victory. Morissette had a very simple game plan on Sunday. “I really wanted to win,” said Morissette. “The competition this weekend was great, and it definitely made today very stressful. I am extremely happy that I was able to come out on top.”
Girls 14 & Under
After shooting a round one score of 80 (+8), Emily Romancew of Pierrefonds, QC held a three-shot lead over Mathilde Denicourt of St.-Césaire, QC and Lory Paradis of Blainville, QC. In the final round, Romancew balanced four bogies with four birdies, on her way to shooting a round of even-par (72). This was Romancew’s sixth CJGA victory this season. “I was disappointed with my putting after round one, and worked hard on it prior to the final round. That gave me a lot more confidence, which turned out to be the difference-maker. I’m looking forward to next year’s events already!,” said an ecstatic Romancew.
With the conclusion of the Quebec schedule, the CJGA will now finish the calendar year south of the border. The CJGA World Junior Challenge presented by Golfweek will be held from December 27-30 at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, FL. For more information on the event, please click here.
