Richmond Hill, ON (October 4, 2015) – CJGA Juniors battled tough, fall conditions in the CJGA Ontario Fall Series Finale at Bond Head presented by Bushnell. Through the chilly, windy, and rainy conditions, golfers were able to bear down and post some great scores. Zack Mason, Grant Lau, Anna Foley, and Emily Zhu captured victory in their respective divisions to finish off the CJGA Ontario schedule.
Boys 15-19
Zack Mason (Toronto, ON) rose to the challenge of the punishing weather conditions to put together two impressive rounds of golf on the weekend. Zack’s first round 77 (+5) was highlighted by a hole-out for eagle on the par-5 9th hole, and was the only sub-80 score of the round. As rain moved in on the back nine, Mason was able to hold steady and fire an impressive score that gave him a four shot lead heading into Sunday. The 16 year-old was able to put together a second round 79 (+7) to finish with a tournament total 156 (+12) and claim victory. Post-round, Zack highlighted a few elements of his game that were key to his win. “I just wanted to stay focused and take the round shot-by-shot. I was good off the tee all weekend, and my putting from inside 10-feet helped save a few key par’s,” said a humble Mason on Sunday. This was Zack’s second win of the season, as he also won the CJGA season-opening event at Willow Valley in April.
Daniel George (Richmond Hill, ON) finished runner-up to Mason, with round of 81-80 for a tournament total of 161 (+17).
Boys 14 & Under
After a tight leaderboard through the first round, with seven players within three shots of the lead, Grant Lau (Toronto, ON) fired a final round 75 (+3) for his first career CJGA win. After a first round 83 (+11), and sitting in a tie for the lead, Grant was able to separate himself from the field and show that he has the game to win. Lau notes that the course played tough over the weekend, especially with the weather, but was able to overcome the fierce conditions and reign victorious. “I was able to hit fairways and greens all weekend, and that’s what you need to do at this course. The wind made it tough, especially with the fescue, but I was able to play a controlled game and it paid off,” Lau said after his win.
Kyle Chung (Brampton, ON) was able to claim second place in the Boys 14 and Under division, thanks in part to a second round 75 (+3) to finish three strokes behind Lau at a total of 161 (+17).
Girls 15-19
With a three-way tie atop the leaderboard through the first round, the Girls 15-19 division produced an exciting finish late Sunday afternoon. Prevailing in the end was Toronto native Anna Foley, who’s final round score of 85 (+13) was enough to earn her a spot atop the leaderboard at the Fall Finale. Foley, who was tied in the lead heading into Round 2, made note of how the course conditions played a factor this past weekend. “Saturday’s weather was brutal; all the girls struggled and luckily I was able to have a chance come Sunday. I shot well on the front-nine, and was able to finish off with a few key par’s to hold off Emilie; she was fire on the back-nine,” said Anna after her score was made official, awarding her the victory.
Emilie Tyndall (Kirkland, QC) fought hard to the end, and her final round score of 87 (+15) was able to propel her into the runner-up position at this year’s final event.
Girls 14 and Under
Emily Zhu (Richmond Hill, ON) continued her winning ways this past weekend, shooting rounds of 87 and 83 for a 36-hole total of 170 (+26). The 11 year-old has been the most victorious on the CJGA Junior Tour this season, claiming six victories along with two runner-up finishes in eight events. Emily’s back-nine score of 39 (+3) in the second round contained eight pars, and was only tarnished by a triple bogey on the tough par-3 15th hole.
This event marked the conclusion of the 2015 CJGA Ontario schedule, which contained 25 Junior Tour and 20 Linkster Tour events in total. The CJGA now heads south, for the annual CJGA World Junior Challenge from December 27-30 at Innisbrook Resort 7 Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. For more information on the event, click here.
