Lethbridge, AB (May 24, 2015)- After a great first round on Sunday, junior golfers kicked off Sunday with round 2 at Henderson Lake Golf Club. Competition was intense this weekend as junior golfers were looking to gain exemptions into the CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship, the CJGA Mizuno National Junior Golf Championship, IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championship, and Veritas World Juniors. Marco Trstenjak, Ethan Choi, Kenna Hughes, and Annabelle Ackroyd rose to the occasion and claimed victory in their respective divisions.

Boys 15-19

IMG_3417Marco Trstenjak from Winnipeg, MB claimed the top spot in the Boys 15-19 division, with a two-day score of 144 (+4). Heading into the final round, Marco enjoyed a one shot lead after a 71 (+1) in the first round. His round of 73 (+3), which included one birdie and four bogeys, secured his win at Henderson Lake.

Jared Nicolls of Ponoka, AB came out strong on Sunday, shooting a round of 68 (-2) thanks in large part to his four birdies on the day. His comeback came up short, as he fell to Trstenjak by two shots in the end.

Boys 14 & Under

Overnight leader Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek, AB followed his first round score of 69 (-1) with an even-par 70, good enough to claim victory in the IMG_3411Boys 14 & Under division. Ethan’s clutch birdie on the 36th hole of the championship secured his win at Henderson Lake.

Choi’s three birdies and three bogies on Sunday were enough to hold off Mitchell Fleming, who shot a tournament-best score of 66 on the second day to make it a close race. Fleming eagled the par-4 10th hole at Henderson Lake, and followed it up with two consecutive birdies on the 11th and 12th in his second round on Sunday.

Girls 15-19

In the Girls 15-19 division, Kenna Hughes of Calgary, AB recorded the win in a thrilling competition that came down to a playoff. After eaIMG_3412ch shooting a two-day total of 155 (+11), Hughes and Bria Jansen of Cochrane, AB battled hard through Sunday and into the playoff, with Hughes eventually coming out on top. Hughes gave up the lead she had from Round 1, but was able to come through in the clutch and win in a playoff.

Jansen’s 76 (+4) on Sunday put pressure on Hughes in a comeback effort, but was not enough as she eventually fell in a playoff.

Girls 14 & UnderIMG_3408

In the Girls 14 & Under division Annabelle Ackroyd of Calgary, AB followed her first round 77 (+5) with score of 73 (+1) in the second round to claim the victory. Her two-day total of 150 (+6) proved good enough to defeat runner-up Tillie Clagget of Calgary, AB.

Alberta players will look to improve upon their play this weekend when the CJGA comes to Leduc, AB next week for the CJGA Junior Series at Redtail.
