-CJGA Qualifiers Will See Divisional Winners Receive Exemption into Championship-
North York, Ontario (April 12, 2019) The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) 2019 Qualifying Series for the IMG Academy Junior World Championship begins this week in British Columbia with the IMG Junior World Championship Qualifier at Mayfair Lakes. Players from across British Columbia & Alberta age 13 to 18, will compete on the par 71 layout across four divisions for their chance to earn spots in this years IMG Academy Junior World Championship in San Diego, California.
Every season the CJGA conducts qualifying events for the IMG Academy Junior World Championship across Canada for junior players from age 7-18 years of age, through both its Junior & Linkster Tours. Beginning in 2019 the format for qualifying was modified so that the divisional winners from each event will automatically be awarded one of the available qualifying spots.
“This year with few exceptions, participants in the Qualifiers will know as of the completion of the tournament whether they will be able to punch their ticket to San Diego. Our hope is that this new structure will be more transparent for participants and encourage more players to come out and compete for their shot at earning a spot” said Reegan Price, Director of Tournament Operations for the Canadian Junior Golf Association.
Prior to 2019 spots in the IMG Junior World Championship were determined via a shortlist that compared player performance across all of the qualifying sites in Canada. Participants will still have to meet the minimum scoring requirements in each qualifier in order to earn the spot but for the most part the new qualifying structure will mean that with few exceptions the winner of the qualifying site for each division will be representing CJGA Team Canada in San Diego this July.

History of the Junior World Golf Championships
It was February, 1968 when John W Brown, A.S. “Lou” Smith and Norrie West decided the San Diego Junior Golf Association would host the Junior World Golf Championships. The three had discussed the idea of organizing a tournament where juniors from all parts of the world could come together to play golf and share in cultural exchange.
The following is taken from the 1968 Junior World Program created by Norrie West:
‘The idea behind the Junior World Golf Championships is simply “YOUTH.” The San Diego County Junior Golf Association is founded on the principle of serving young people, in the hope that by doing so today’s youth will have a better chance of creating the world we all want. The Junior World tournament is an international extension of that principle. We believe that by bringing together young people from all parts of the world and all parts of our nation, we are helping to bring about greater understanding among people of differing cultures and values.’
In its inaugural year, 475 juniors participated in the event representing seven countries and 20 states. Today, the tournament has grown to 1200 participants representing 56 countries and 42 states. The IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships is the largest international event in the world and is unique for its international representation and cultural diversity.
