Georgetown, ON (August 3rd, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted the three day Eastern Canadian Junior Championship last week at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in beautiful Georgetown, ON. The weather was spectacular in Georgetown as juniors enjoyed playing in great golf conditions throughout all three days. Eagle Ridge was in great condition, and despite not being the longest yardage on the CJGA circuit, players did find the course difficult with challenging hole layouts.

Junior Boys U19

Kyle Chung of Brampton, ON was victorious in the Junior Boys division capturing the Eastern Canadian Junior Championship trophy. Chung had stellar rounds of 72-68-71-211 to win the division by four strokes. Kyle’s second round 68 was tied for the lowest round of the tournament within the division. Chung was feeling really good about his win after his final round, as he was proud to have three great rounds and to win a big tournament in his junior career.

Chung’s putting was the difference all week, as he was able to make seven birdies on his way to posting his second round 68, “My putting was really hot, I did make a few mistakes but other than that just hitting the greens and then making the one putts was the game plan during that round.” Kyle entered the final round with a seven shot lead, his game plan was to focus on one shot at a time and not worry about how other players were doing. His strategy paid off as he was able to edge second place by four strokes to finish two under par for the tournament.

Ashton McCulloch from Kingston, ON was able to make a charge up the leaderboard during the last round to finish in solo second place at Eagle Ridge. McCulloch posted scores of 77-70-68-215 to finish four shots off of Chung’s pace. Ashton’s final round 68 was the lowest score during the final round and tied to lowest posted in the tournament.

Junior Girls U19

Cynthia Huo of Markham, ON was victorious in the Junior Girls division at Eagle Ridge after she comfortably won the division. Huo had scores of 89-92-86-267 in which her final round 86 was the lowest score posted in the division. Cynthia was proud of her win after she just started golfing a year ago and this was her fourth competitive tournament in her young career.

“It was nice because when you get to play this course more, you realize where you are not suppose to hit it and you can figure out slopes on the greens, which helped me during the third round.” commented Huo in a post round interview. Cynthia relied on her putter during the tournament as she felt that her golf swing was not as consistent as it should of been.

Finishing in solo second place from Richmond Hill, ON was Gracie Halcrow. Halcrow shot rounds of 105-93-93-291 to earn the second place trophy.

Bantam Boys U15

Kavith Ranchagoda of Richmond Hill, ON was able to add another CJGA victory to his career after winning the Eastern Canadian Junior Championship by two strokes. Ranchagoda had rounds of 71-71-73-215 to finish the tournament just two over par. Kavith felt the nerves coming down the stretch as he saw his lead trimmed down to one stroke on the 18th tee but was satisfied with the way he handled the emotions to clinch the victory.

Ranchagoda just recently made a swing coach change and he feels that everything is starting to come together after shooting two even par rounds then a two over round, which has Kavith feeling confident heading into his next event. “Today’s final round, I didn’t change a single, even thought I had a six shot lead, I said that I was just going to play the way I play, Im not going to play conservative just because I had a lead.” commented Ranchagoda on his mindset entering the final round.

Making a charge at Ranchagoda during the final round was Burlington’s own Peter Blazevic, who finished in solo second place just two shots off the lead. Blazevic had round of 74-74-69-217 in which his final round 69 was the lowest score posted in the division during the event.

Bantam Girls U15

Annie Piggott of Lindsay, ON was able to win the Bantam Girls division at the Eastern Canadian Junior Championship. Piggott comfortably won the division after posting rounds of 90-78-84-252.

Annie’s second round 78 was the lowest score posted in the division throughout the event. She was pretty excited about winning one of the largest tournaments on the CJGA this year.

Finishing in second place was Katherine Cranston from Oakville who had rounds of 100-86-86-272.
