Richmond Hill, ON (July 26, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association in partnership with Sandarich was proud to host the second annual Tough as Steel Junior Classic at DiamondBack Golf Club in Richmond Hill, ON. Despite light rain during the afternoon of the first round, the weather during the final round was perfect for golf. The sun was out but the temperatures remained low which made for a pleasant second round. The golf course played tough for the juniors, as Sam Hogan in the Bantam Boys division was the only player to shoot under par in the tournament.

Junior Boys U19

Jacob Lacko of Sudbury, ON won the Junior Boys division title at the Tough as Steel Junior Classic at DiamondBack Golf Club. Lacko shot rounds of 76-73-149 to win by one stroke. His final round 73 was the lowest score in the division throughout the tournament.

Lacko explained how he was able to win today, “The weather conditions didn’t really effect me, I found the golf course easy because I was playing really well. My ball striking was really good as I was able to hit the first nine greens in regulation”. This is Jacob’s first career win on the CJGA.

Michael Wu of Victoria, BC finished just one stroke behind Lacko as he placed second in the Junior Boys division. Wu posted scores of 74-76-150.

Junior Girls U19

Vaijayanti Bharkhada of Brampton, ON was victorious in the Junior Girls Division at the Tough as Steel Junior Classic hosted at DiamondBack Golf Club. Bharkhada had rounds of 81-79-160 to comfortably win the division title. Her final round 79 was the lowest score in the division.

Bharkhada relied on her solid play off of the tee throughout the course of the tournament to make up for her chipping around the greens. She was most proud of her third shot into the green on the par five first hole as she put it close for a tap in birdie to start her round. This is Bharkhada’s first win on the CJGA this year.

Finishing in second place in the Junior Girls division was Rachael Rier from Hanover, ON. Rier had rounds of 85-89-174 to finish in solo second place.

Bantam Boys U15

Sam Hogan from Burlington, ON was able to capture his first ever Canadian Junior Golf Association victory at the Tough as Steel Junior Classic at DiamondBack Golf Club. Hogan shot rounds of 70-78-148 to clinch the win by six strokes over second place. Sam was feeling pretty pumped after he received his first place trophy especially after he posted his lowest tournament score during the first round.

“I kept the ball in play, I never lost a ball, I was hitting the fairways. I hit almost every green and even the long putts were dropping that is how I was able to shoot under par yesterday.” said Hogan in a post round interview. He also commented how he felt lucky about getting an early tee time before the light rain fall that happened in the afternoon during the first round.

Finishing in second place from Etobicoke, ON was Connor Munro after he shot rounds of 80-74-154 to finish six back of Hogan.

Bantam Girls U15

Jennifer Gu from West Vancouver, BC was able to capture the Bantam Girls trophy at the Tough as Steel Junior Classic hosted at DiamondBack Golf Club. Wu shot rounds of 81-84-165 to win the division by four strokes. Jennifer’s opening round 81 was the lowest round posted in the division

“My driving for sure, I think I only missed about four or five fairways throughout the two days.” replied Gu when asked about the strongest part of her game during the tournament.

Elaine Giantsopoulous of Richmond Hill, ON finished in a close second place jus four shots behind Gu. Giantsopoulous had rounds of 84-85-169
