Brooklin, ON (July 18th, 2017) – The second round of the 2017 CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship wrapped up this afternoon with an exciting three-hole playoff in the Junior Boys division to determine the final two spots in the round of sixteen match play bracket. The juniors experienced better weather conditions today as it was warm and sunny, which helped dry up the soft spots on the golf course. The scores were low today across all divisions as players had to go low to make the cut.

First round leader, Tyler McDowell of Whitby, ON, was able to play another great round as he shot 72 for the second straight day to clinch the number one seed in the Junior Boys division bracket. Brendan Dunphy from Whitby and Jordan Breen of Brooklin both finished the second round with two day totals of 147 as Dunphy shot 71 on the second day and Breen shot 74. Dunphy will be ranked second in the bracket while Breen will be the third seed.

There was a playoff in the Junior Boys division to determine the final two spots in the round of sixteen. Bavake Sihota of Caledon, ON made a birdie on the second playoff hole to advance into the round of 16 while Parker Lee from Oro Medonte, ON made a par on the third playoff hole to earn the last spot in the competition over Connor Danis of Iroquois Falls, ON.

Kacey Walker of Mississauga, ON was able to improve on her first round 85 with a second round 75 to have a two day total of 160 to give her the number one seed in the Junior Girls division heading into the match play. Sukriti Harjai of Niagara Falls, ON had the second lowest round of the day in the division as her 81 gave her a two day total of 163 to finish three shots behind Walker and help her earn the second seed in the match play bracket.

First round leader Ethan Cardwell of Courtice, ON shot a 78 in his second round but was still able to clinch the number one position in the Bantam Boys division bracket with a two day total of 148. One shot off of Cardwell’s pace was Zander Gibson of Milton, ON who had a second round 76 to earn the second seed. Peter Blazevic of Burlington, ON had the low round of the day, as his 73 helped him climb the leaderboard and earn the third position in the bracket.

The final four in the Bantam Girls match play bracket was determined after the second round of stroke play this afternoon. Madelin Boyd of Oshawa, ON is the number one seed heading into the semi finals on Thursday after her amazing second round 76, which tied as the low round of the tournament. Sarah Gallagher from Burlington, ON heads into the match play with the second seed as she shot a 84 in the second round.

In 2001 the PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship was incorporated into the CJGA tournament schedule to provide junior golfers with outstanding skills an opportunity to compete in a match play format. Juniors gain a valuable experience due to the tournaments’ strength of field and have a chance to evaluate their skills against some of the nation’s best junior golfers. This tournament is the only national junior match play event in Canada.
