Toronto, ON (July 10th, 2017) – The opening round of the 2017 North America Cup at Weston Golf Club ended with an exciting finish to give IJGT Team USA a four to one lead over CJGA Team Canada heading into the Tuesday Foursome matches. Jaden Weisman from Team USA drained a 30 foot birdie putt on 18 to give himself and Patrick Sheehan the 1UP win over Andy Luo and Jakob Lemieux. Luo gave the Canadians confidence after sticking his approach shot within inches of the hole to secure a par but it was over shadowed by Weisman’s clutch putt. “I had to punch out to about 133 yards from my tee shot, then from that shot I was able to put it within a foot for the par, but then they were able to make a long birdie putt to win the match, It was very intense”, explained Luo in the clubhouse during a post round interview.

The American pairing of Neal Shipley and James Meyer were also able to close out their match with a long putt from Meyer on the 14th hole. Meyer drained about a 60 foot putt to clinch a point for Team USA, 5&4 over Graeme Edwards and Ethan Cardwell.

Team Canada pairing of Jocelyn Menard and Romi Dilawri ran into a very hot Team USA pairing of Cole Berger and Mike Ordona. The match was all squared until Team USA strung together five birdies and a eagle to close out the match over Menard and Dilawri.

Ashley Chow and Erin Kim of Team Canada lead the American duo of Sarah Perine and Sonia Mistry after the first hole then continued a back and forth battle until the end when some clutch putts from the Americas ultimately gave them the 4&3 win.

Canadians Vincent Poirier and Luca Ferrara were victorious over Team USA members Jack Cornforth and Chase Phillips winning 4&3. Poirier was pleased with the way that himself and Ferrara played during the first round and are looking forward to them teaming up again for the Tuesday Foursome matches.

Despite trailing the Americans 4-1, Playing Team Captain Poirier is very confident in Team Canada bouncing back tomorrow morning. “It was a tough day for the team, but I am confident tomorrow with the alternate shot matches that we can get back three or four points, we have a good team with consistent players”, said Poirier in a post round interview.

Tomorrow morning’s foursome matches will begin at 8:00am at Weston Golf Club. The second round match ups are below:
