Milton, ON (July 6th, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted the CJGA Junior at Glencairn earlier this week at the beautiful c just outside of Milton, ON. The weather was beautiful during the first and second round, a change from the rainy weather in previous spring tournaments. The first round saw the juniors play Leithfield then Speyside followed by Scotchblock then Speyside in the final round. The golf course was in great condition and the juniors enjoyed playing the Scottish links style courses and using the top notch practice facilities at Glencairn.

Junior Boys U19

Stefan Nicoara from Richmond Hill, ON was able to clinch his first ever CJGA win on Wednesday afternoon after shooting impressive rounds of 77-76-153 to win by four strokes. Nicoara entered the final round with a one shot lead over a very tight leaderboard. Stefan was able to improve on his opening round 77 by following it up with the tournament low 76 on Wednesday.

“It feels great, this is my first win so it feels great,” said Stefan in a post round interview. Nicoara really enjoyed playing Glencairn this week, “Its a nice course, playing all three nines it meant something different everyday, so its tough but the greens were really nice and quick.” Stefan enjoyed playing Scotch Block the most because it demanded driver off of every tee, a club that he enjoys hitting.

Matthew Medhurst of Caledon, ON placed second in the Junior Boys division at Glencairn this past week. Medhurst posted scores of 79-78-157 to just finish four shots off of Nicoara’s pace.

Junior Girls U19

Hunter Nugent of Oakville, ON was able to win the Junior Girls division title at Glencairn. This was Nugent’s first career CJGA victory coming in only her second event on the CJGA. Hunter had rounds of 89-84-173 to win by four shots. Nugent entered the final round just one shot behind of the leader and her 84 on the final day ended up being the low round in the division which helped her move into first place.

Nugent enjoyed being able to play all three nines at Glencairn but found Speyside the toughest of the nines, “Speyside was hard because there was more dog legs on holes,” said Hugent in a post round interview. When asked about the best part of her game during the tournament Hunter replied, “probably my approach shots, I landed one about five feet from the hole.”

Victoria Li from Toronto, ON placed second in the Junior Girls division after having rounds of 88-89-177.

Bantam Boys U15

Kavith Ranchagoda of Richmond Hill, ON was able to clinch the Bantam Boys division at Glencairn after stellar rounds of 76-73-149. Ranchagoda entered the final round as the leader by one and after a division low round of 73 he was able to win by three shots over second place.

Players had beautiful weather during the week which included cloudless skies and hot temperatures during the final round with had an effect on Kavith’s golf game, “It didn’t effect me physically but it effected my golf shots because my balls were travelling further so I needed to adjust that.” This was Ranchagoda’s first win on the CJGA this season after clinching three victories on tour last year. When asked about goals that he had entering the golf season Kavith set out to maintain a five handicap and be successful by resorting to motivational speakers, “I watch these motivational videos by Eric Thomas and he says that the first step to success is waking up expecting to win, don’t come to play second place.” Ranchagoda looks to continue his successful form leading into his next CJGA tournament.

Dayton Price of Mississauga, ON finished in second place at Glencairn after shooting rounds of 77-75-152 to finish just three strokes off of Ranchagoda’s lead.

Bantam Girls U15

Rozlyn Rooke was crowned champion in the Bantam Girls division in her hometown of Milton at Glencairn this past week. Rooke posted scores of 93-87-180 to comfortably win the division title. Rozlyn entered the final round with a one shot lead and with a stellar second round of 87 which was the low round in the division during the week, she was able to break away from the field.

“I feel really proud because I tried really hard, I had a lot of practice and because it was a hard golf course,” replied Rooke when asked about how she felt after her win. Rozlyn would like to work on her short game for her next CJGA tournament because she found the greens to be tricky to read and would like to put her approach shots closer to the pins.

Calista Zeng of Maple, ON placed second at the CJGA Junior at Glencairn after shooting rounds of 103-94-197.
