Pickering, ON (June 12, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted its annual CJGA Junior at the beautiful Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club. Juniors were treated with beautiful weather this past weekend, as they played under warm sunny skies. The golf course was in great shape with Cherry Downs signature tricky greens. Juniors really enjoyed playing at a great golf course as the tournament crowned three division champions.

Junior Boys U19

Ethan Collins of Whitby, ON was able to capture the Junior Boys division by a single shot on Sunday afternoon. Collins posted amazing rounds of 74-77-151 to clinch his first career CJGA win.

“It feels pretty good, the first win is always the greatest. Its my first win on the CJGA so its pretty solid”, said Collins in the clubhouse post round. Collins, like much of the field, found the greens at Cherry Downs to be very fast and challenging to putt on. Despite the greens being difficult and quick, Collins strength over the weekend was his putter, “Around the greens I was making some putts, getting up and down from all over which was good”.

Finishing only one shot off of Collins pace was the very joyful Matthew Medhurst of Caledon, ON. Medhurst had consistent rounds of 76-76-152 as he battled the heat at Cherry Downs. His 76 during the final round was the lowest round in the division on Sunday.

Junior Girls U19

Raesa Sheikh from Markham, ON was victorious in the Junior Girls division at Cherry Downs. Sheikh had solid rounds of 87-79-166 to comfortably win the division trophy. Sheikh’s final round 79 was the low round of the tournament within the division and she was the only player to break 80.

Sheikh felt that her first round 87 didn’t go as planned but she was pleased to bounce back on Sunday with a good score. When asked about how she felt after her win, Sheikh replied saying “I feel more confident now for other tournament after winning this one”. This was Sheikh’s first win on the CJGA this season, as she has posted wins in previous years.

Second place belonged to Nadia Marrast of Toronto, ON. Marrast consistent rounds of 115-115-230 to place second at Cherry Downs.

Bantam Boys U15

Courtice, Ontario’s own Ethan Cardwell was once again crowned Bantam Boys division winner at Cherry Downs over the weekend. This is Cardwell’s third straight victory on the CJGA. Cardwell posted weekend scores of 77-78-155 to clinch the title by six strokes. Coming into the season, Cardwell had not won a CJGA event on the Junior Tour. Breaking through earlier this year at St. Andrew’s Valley has lead to Cardwell feeling confident about his game entering every tournament.

“At the start of the season I was confident that I could win events this year, until I ran into Peter (Blazevic), and he is a great challenge to play against”, said Cardwell in the clubhouse post round. When asked about if his goals have changed due to winning three straight tournaments, Cardwell explained “Now my mindset is to win every tournament that I can, every time I step on the golf course I want to win”.

Eric Jung of Thornhill, ON finished in second place behind Cardwell. Jung posted scores of 84-77-161 in which his 77 was tied for the low round of the tournament.
