Ryley, AB (June 12, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted its first David Hearn Junior Series event in Western Canada this weekend. Each division winner from this past weekend automatically qualifies for the David Hearn Kia Championship at Rockway Vineyards in St. Catherines, ON in September. Overall, the players scored very well this weekend at Coal Creek Golf Course, with the champions shooting very impressive rounds.

Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek, AB was able to hoist the Junior Boys division trophy at Coal Creek after posting stellar rounds of 69-72-141. Choi entered the final round with a two shot lead and was able to maintain the distance to hold on for the two shot victory. The competition in the Junior Boys division was outstanding with fourteen players being within eight shots of Choi.

With the win this weekend, Choi has qualified for both the David Hearn Kia Championship and the Juniors America’s Cup. “Im so pumped, it should be a lot of fun. Im going to go out there and just feel it and try to hit fairways and greens”, replied Choi was asked about his thoughts on qualifying for two prestigious junior events.

“It was a lot of fun out there, I played with two great girls, the weather held out and It was really fun”, explained Koss when asked about her thoughts on the tournament. The best part of Koss’s game over the weekend was her length off of the tee, “The closer I can get off of the tee to the green, the easier it is to go up and down”.

Cassidy Laidlaw from Calgary, AB finished in second place after posting rounds of 80-77-157.

Bantam Boys U15

Naoki Iwasaki from Edmonton, AB was able to narrowly clinch the Bantam Boys division by one stroke after having great rounds of 73-72-145. Iwasaki entered the final round two shots behind of the lead and with a consistent round was able to move to the top of the leaderboard.

Iwasaki did not believe he had his best performance over the final round but he was able to squeeze out a win with a stellar short game. “My game was rough, I three putted a lot but my chipping saved me”, said Iwasaki in a post round interview.

It was a tight finish coming down the stretch. Finishing only one stroke behind Iwasaki was Richard Dou of Calgary, AB. Dou posted rounds of 71-75-146. His 71 was the lowest round in the division over the course of the tournament.

Bantam Girls U15

Kaitlyn Wingnean from Edmonton, AB was the Bantam Girls division champion by three strokes over the weekend. Wingnean’s rounds of 82-85-167 clinched her a spot in the David Hearn Kia Championship in September.

Wingnean had to adapt her putting over the weekend as she found that, “The greens were pretty slow the first day and today they were pretty fast, so they sped up”. Wingnean overall enjoyed playing Coal Creek and enjoyed the tight competition as it prepares her for upcoming golf tournaments.

Brooke Brezovski of St. Alberta, AB finished in second place just three shots behind of Wingnean. Brezovski shot tournament rounds of 87-83-170.
