Shubenacadie, NS (May 16, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association hosted its first tournament on the east coast this past weekend at The Links at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie, NS. The first event of the season was a DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier. Juniors from across the Maritimes competed in their respected division to try to qualify for the DeLaet Cup later this summer hosted in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Players had warm weather on Saturday, but had to battle through cold weather and windy conditions on Sunday.
Junior Boys U19
Shaun Margeson of Fall River, NS was victorious in the Junior Boys division after posting rounds of 73-77-150, good enough for a five shot victory. Margeson’s first round 73 was the lowest round of the tournament in the Junior Boys division.
“Definitely good, I hit it really well all weekend. I think my game is good right now and I played really well”, said Margeson in the clubhouse after his round. He also mentioned his accuracy off of the tee as a key factor to winning, “driving was good, I hit almost every tee shot in the fairway today and yesterday”.
Matthew Chandler from Chester, NS finished in second place after posting rounds of 76-79-155.
Junior Girls U19
Port Williams, NS own Heather McLean captured the Junior Girls division at The Links at Penn Hills over the weekend. McLean had rounds of 85-83-168 to win the title by three strokes. McLean’s final round 83 was the lowest score posted in the division over the weekend.
McLean entered the final round with a two stroke lead and was able to manage the weather conditions on Sunday, “It was really windy today and cold, and it made the course a lot harder and longer. My ball would plug and not get the roll that it would usually because of the softer conditions” Despite the soft conditions, McLean was still able to chip in for birdie on the 12th hole.
Meghan McLean, also from Port Williams, NS fell just short from forcing a playoff with her sister after having rounds of 87-84-171. Meghan’s scorecard included a final round back nine of 40, which was her best nine hole score of the tournament.
Bantam Boys U15
Owen Mullen of Truro, NS was the DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier Bantam Boys champion after having solid rounds of 79-77-156. Mullen entered the final round three shots behind the leader but overcame the deficit to win by three shots. Mullen’s final round 77 was the best score posted in the division during the final round.
When asked about how he felt after coming back to win, Mullen said “I feel good, I had a couple mishaps yesterday that I would of really thought about if I didn’t win today”. Mullen lives only a short drive from The Links at Penn Hills, and he was pleased to win the DeLaet Cup Qualifier on a course that he likes and has played multiple times.
Jake Smith from Dartmouth, NS finished in second place only three shots behind of Mullen. Smith had rounds of 76-83-159 in which his first round 76 was the low round of the tournament by anyone in the division.
Bantam Girls U15
Abbey Baker of Halifax, NS hoisted the Bantam Girls division title after shooting rounds of 95-97-192.

Formally known as the Junior Canada Cup, the DeLaet Cup is the only national junior Ryder Cup style event in Canada. A one-of-a-kind experience for the next generation of Canadian golfers, the Delate Cup will feature a 12-person team in an East vs West showdown. The event was developed to stretch beyond the typical stroke play format in order to provide juniors with the opportunity to test their skills in other formats, such as fourball matches, foursome matches and singles matches.
