St. Andrews, Scotland (August 9, 2016) – Cloudy skies and warm temperatures welcomed junior golfers from Scotland, Canada and the United States at the first round of the Euro Junior Golf Cup held at Scotscraig Golf Club in Tayport, Fife, Scotland. The USA team from California took all of their first 9 matches and now hold a comfortable lead over Canada, who managed only 8 points in the opening round. Home country Scotland trails in third with 6.5 points.

Girls Division U19

Leading off first for Canada was Angel Lin of Surrey, B.C., who played through injury to put Canada’s first point on the board with a 6 & 5 win over veteran Scottish junior Brogan Clark.

Following Lin was fellow B.C., native Sophia Bian, of Vancouver. Bian took a quick 2UP lead after two holes, but fell into trouble in the back, losing the match 3 & 1 over Angela Ding of Team USA.

Boys Division U19

Despite a horrendous start, Bryce Krakowec Tickner of Victoria, B.C., collected 1.5 out of a possible 2 points for Canada. After four holes, Krakowec Tickner was 4 down in both matches but pushed his opponents all the way to the 18th hole.

Canada saved its best for last in Nicholas Workun of Ottawa, Ont., who defeated both of his opponents and closed the gap with the Americans.

Boys Division U15

Tony Li of Vancouver, B.C., continued to post points for the Canadians with a 3 & 1 win over Scotsman, Owen Abe-Baker who is playing in his first Euro Junior Golf Cup. Li, like most of his teammates, fell short over his American opponent losing 7 & 6.

“Despite the slow start, I’m pleased with how the team performed today” said Non-Playing Captain for CJGA Team Canada, Brad Kinvig. “The American squad played extremely well today. We have a great group of athletes and I know our best is yet to come.”

Canada will now turn its focus on Leven Golf Course. With the expected cool temperatures and wind, juniors are sure to face a true Scottish test tomorrow.

Second round matches will continue tomorrow at Leven Links Golf Course starting at 11:45am local time. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
