Whitby, Ont. (July 28, 2016) – Thursday marked the end of the 16th annual CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship at Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Whitby, Ont. It was another successful tournament, showcasing many talented junior golfers. Hot and humid was the theme for the past four days, leaving the field of golfers feeling the heat in more ways than one. Five matches took place this afternoon in the final round of match play, resulting in many upsets..
Bantam Boys Division (U15)
Luca Ferrara, 14, from Toronto, Ont., began his journey of match play as the 6th seed. Ferrara moved his way up the bracket one match at a time. Today, he made sure not to psyche himself out and work through each hole. His success in the final match awarded him the first place title for the Bantam Boys divisions, a great honour for him as it is his first time winning a tournament of this size. Ferrara battled Andrew Szent-Ivany in his final match, winning on the 19th hole.
Bantam Girls Division (U15)
Vanessa Chychrun, 14, from Aurora, Ont., took down Raesa Sheikh who was the first seed, in a close match. The two girls set the pace for the field in the final match, Vanessa was thankful for her putter, as she made many saves on greens, always telling herself that birdies make wins. Sheikh had confidently worked her way through her opponents but fell short against Chychrun, who was awarded the title with a 2UP win.
Juvenile Boys Division (U17)
Alexander Yang, 13, from Carlsbad, Cali., who was seeded first in his division and could not be touch in this tournament. Yang kept a strong lead during the weekend and saw it through, claiming a 5&4 win over Anderson. Yang knew to play a conservative game to keep his lead.

Junior Boys Division (U19)
Greifenberger, 17, from Toronto, Ont., forced an upset this afternoon in the Junior Boys division as he moved into the final match after forcing the first seed out. Greifenberger came into the match as the fifth seed with something to prove. He knew to be patient when dealing with heavy heat and time restraints, allowing him to claim a 3&2 win over Brown, who was seeded second.
Junior Girls Division (U19)
Another upset was seen in the Junior Girls division as Getty, a strong golfer and seeded first in the division, was overcome by Rina Jung, who was seeded second. The two girls played an impressive match, but Jung dominated Getty, earning a 4&3 win. The 17 year old from Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., attributes feeling so comfortable on the course as a factor in her win.

About the CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship
In 2001 the PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship was incorporated into the CJGA tournament schedule to provide junior golfers with outstanding skills an opportunity to compete in a match play format. Juniors gain a valuable experience due to the tournaments’ strength of field and have a chance to evaluate their skills against some of the nation’s best junior golfers. This tournament is the only national junior match play event in Canada.
