Pickering, Ont. (June 7, 2016) – It was an eventful weekend for Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club in Pickering, Ont., as they hosted the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Junior and Linkster Tours. Junior Tour golfers competed for the coveted opportunity to represent CJGA Team Canada in the Euro Junior Golf Cup, while Dunphy walked away from the weekend with his first CJGA win.
Junior Tour
Juvenile Boys Division (U17)
Brendan Dunphy, 15, from Whitby, Ont., came out of the first round with six birdies under his belt and entered the second with a six shot lead. This was enough for Dunphy to claim the Juvenile Boys division title as well as the lowest score for the overall tournament. He fired rounds of 72 (+1), 78 (+7) for a tournament total of 150.
“I am happy with how well I performed under pressure this weekend,” explains Dunphy. “I have my irons to thank for my first CJGA win!”
Pursuing Dunphy was Jeffrey Fang, 13, from Newmarket, Ont. Fang tallied five birdies over two days and fired rounds of 78 (+7), 75 (+4) for a weekend total of 153.
Juvenile Girls Division (U17)
Kacey Walker, 16, from Mississauga, Ont., dominated the Juvenile Girls division. Walker posted rounds of 92, 91 for a tournament total of 183.
Kyra Vandernoort, 14, from Kitchener, Ont., finished in the runner-up position after carding rounds of 100, 110 for a two-day total of 210.
Junior Boys Division (U19)
Nicholas Pacione, 17, from Whitby, Ont., ended the weekend with four birdies and a three stroke lead, earning his first CJGA career win in the Junior Boys division. Pacione fired rounds of 76, 82 for a tournament total of 158.
“Competition was tough and there was a constant switch for the lead in my group,” said Pacione. “But my putting was strong and I am excited for my first win.”
Dee Xie, 15, from Toronto, Ont., challenged Pacione but came up short, taking the second place position. Xie posted rounds of 85, 76 for a weekend total of 161.
Junior Girls Division (U19)
Carding matching rounds of 85, Cynthia Zhao, 15, from Toronto, Ont., ended the weekend with a tournament total of 170, adding another win to her resume.
Emily Zhu, 12, from Richmond Hill was a suitable competitor for Zhao. Zhu finished a stroke behind, giving her the second place position. Zhu fired rounds of 89, 82 for a two-day total of 171.
Bantam Boys Division (U15)
Thomas Latter, 12, from Mississauga, Ont., earned the Bantam Boys division title after posting rounds of 79, 80 for a weekend total of 159.
Beni Long, 11, from Toronto, Ont., shadowed Latter but fell into the runner-up position firing rounds of 78, 82, giving him a two-day total of 160.
Bantam Girls Division (U15)
Madelin Boyd, 12, from Oshawa, Ont., was confident in her driving ability this weekend, allowing her to take home the winning title for the Bantam Girls division. Boyd came into the round ready to take the lead.
“The 17th hole was a tough one for me,” commented Boyd. “My driving helped to make up for my putting, something I will be working on for the next CJGA tournament.”
Jue Wen, 14, from North York, Ont., ended the tournament in second place after posting rounds of 85, 92 for a tournament total of 177.
Linkster Tour
Bantam Boys Division (U15)
Matteo Ramzan, 13, from Whitby, Ont., was the Bantam Boys division winner with a round total of 38.
Aidan Bischoff, 14, from Richmond Hill and Carson Duffy, 13, from Toronto, Ont., both claimed the second place position with matching round totals of 39.
Bantam Girls Division (U15)
Gracie Halcrow, 14, from Richmond Hill, Ont., claimed the Bantam Girls division title with a round total of 37.
Alyssa McKee, 14, of Brampton, Ont., followed behind for the runner up position with a tournament total of 45.
Peewee Boys Division (U13)
Ethan Gillis, 12, of Pickering, Ont., won the Peewee Boys division with a four stroke lead. Gillis ended the tournament with a round total of 30.
Matthew Wong, 11, from Toronto, Ont., shadowed Gillis, ending the day with a round total of 34.
Peewee Girls Division (U15)
Evelyn Lai, 13, from Newmarket, Ont., defended the Peewee girls division title with a round total of 40.
Abigail Dove, 11, of Brooklin, Ont., challenged Lai but came up short. Dove took home second place with a round total of 46.
Atom Boys Division (U11)
Matthew Javier, 10, of Toronto, Ont., won the Atom Boys division with a three stroke lead. Javier posted a round total of 37 for the win.
Joseph Sciortino, 10, from Richmond Hill, was the runner-up with a round total of 40.
Atom Girls Division (U11)
Michelle Ding, 10, and Alexa Ouellet, 9, both from Toronto, Ont., settled their matching scores of 44 in a playoff round where Ding stole the lead.
Novice Boys Division (U9)
Lucas Chi, 8, from Markham, Ont., Matthew Simpson, 7, of Etobicoke, Ont., and Landon Kelly, 7 of Bobcaygeon all ended the day with round totals of 39. After the sudden death playoff, Chi was crowned the winner.
Novice Girls Division (U9)
Angela Wong, 7, from Markham, Ont., dominated the Novice Girls division with a round total of 37.
Francesca Ampil, 7, of Brampton, Ont., earned the second place positing after posting a round total of 62.
