Chile’s Joaquin Niemann Continues To Leads Individual Competition

Douro-Dummer, Ont. (September 16, 2015) – Once again, perfect scoring conditions were present at Wildfire Golf Club for the second round of the Canadian International Junior Challenge.  With only three strokes separating first place from fourth, one team was going to need to step up and separate themselves from the pack.  At the end of the day, England was able to claim the lead heading into the final round with a superb second round team total of three-under par (213).  Chile remains in second place after shooting an even-par second round team total (216).  Team USA falls into third place heading into Thursday’s final round.

Gian-Marco Petrozzi and teammate Coby Cartwright led the way for England today.  Petrozzi made five birdies and an eagle on his way to shooting a second round score of three-under par (69).  After a relatively slow start, Petrozzi jumpstarted his round on hole 12.  Standing 120 yards away from the pin, Petrozzi holed out for his only eagle of the day.  “Making that eagle kickstarted my round today.  Although I still made mistakes on the back nine, I was able to bounce back from them and made some birdies to balance out my scorecard.”  Coby Cartwright started strong today making the turn at three-under par (33).  Cartwright cooled off on the back nine, but was still able to shoot a second round score of 71 (-1).

Rounding out the English scoring were Oliver Clarke and Billy Spooner.  Clarke and Spooner shot rounds of 73 (+1) and 74 (+2) respectively.  “I was happy with how the boys played yesterday, they just weren’t able to make any putts.  We stayed behind last night and practiced for over an hour on the practice green, and it definitely paid off today.  I could not be prouder of my players!” said Alan Covey, Team England Manager.

With an even-par second round team total, Chile remains in second place.  After opening the tournament with a score of 71 (-1), Joaquinn Niemann followed up with a round of three-under par (69) today.  Niemann made three straight birdies on the front nine, and five in total today.  Leading the individual competition by only three strokes, Niemann will need another good round tomorrow to be victorious.  Chilean Tomás Gana also played well today, shooting a second round score of even-par (72).  Thomas Burgemeister and Agustin Errazuriz shot rounds of 75 and 76 respectively to round out the scoring.

CJGA Team Canada remains in fifth place after shooting a second round team total of 233 (+17).  Kelvin Lim (Thornhill, ON) lead the way again with a round of 75 (+3), with Ty Celone (Long Sault, ON) not far behind after a round of 78 (+6).  Struggling for the Canadians were Zachary Greifenberger (Toronto, ON) and Andrew Harding (Bedford, NS) who fired rounds of 80 and 89.

After opening with the lead in round one, Team USA shot a second round 221 (+5) team total, and now occupies third place.  Their tournament total of 439 (+7) leaves them six strokes behind England.  Columbia remains in fourth place with a second round team total of 223 (+7).  Although their second round total of 243 (+27) was seven strokes better than day one, Costa Rica remains in sixth place.

The Canadian International Junior Challenge concludes on Thursday with the final round beginning at 8:30am.
