St. Catharines, ON (August 13, 2015)- The final round of the CJGA Mizuno National Junior Championship at Rockway Vineyards Golf Club offered a mix of victory laps and comeback victories across the four divisions.
The Boys 15-19 division boasted the most exciting finish of the tournament. Ty Celone of Long Sault, ON entered the day five stroke behind third round leader Nicholas Brisebois, but a 1-over par 73 was good enough to earn Celone a playoff against Peyton Callens of Langton, ON. Callens posted the days best round shooting a 1-under par 71. On the first playoff hole Celone was able to secure victory after a long two-putt and a short par putt missed by Callens. Friday’s final round was a battle throughout, with five players sharing the lead at one point in the round. Celone noted that back to back birdies on the 12th and 13th gave him the hope he needed to be able to win the tournament.
Grace St-Germain of Orleans, ON capped off her landslide victory in the Girls 15-19 division Friday by posting a 1-under par 71, for a tournament total of 8-under par. St-Germain’s round featured three biridies and one double bogey. She was the only player in any division to break par in all four rounds. St-Germain said key to her success this week was riding a hot putter. Runner up position went to Kenna Hughes of Calgary, AB who posted a final round 9-over par 81.
In the Boys 14 & Under division, Sean Buckles of Vancouver, BC, who entered the final round with a two stroke lead, secured victory shooting a final round 4-over par 76. With his lead still at two shots on the back nine, Buckles came through in the clutch making pars on holes 14-18 for a four shot victory. Evan MacLean of Sudbury, ON finished runner up after posting a final round 5-over par 77.
Cindy Zhou of Niagara Falls, ON completed her victory in the Girls 14 & Under by posting a final round 4-over par 76. Victoria Zheng of Markham, ON finished as the runner up after shooting a 13-over par 85 on Friday.
