Crail, Scotland (July 31, 2015) – In a shocking final day CJGA Team Canada managed to retain the John Clark trophy fending off a resilient Scottish squad. Scotland used the blustery conditions and home course to their advantage to draw even with Canada over the three day tournament at 21 points a side. Canada retains the trophy with its narrow victory last year.
Girls
Canada managed two early points in the round as the Canadian girls of Emilie Tyndall and Lili Klekner-Alt defeated both of their Scottish opponents. Taking on Anna McKay of Scotland on her home course, Klekner-Alt played her best golf of the tournament to win 6 & 5. Klekner-Alt’s undefeated performance this week has been exceptional giving Canada vital points to start each round.
Boys 14 & Under
With his follow teammates getting shut out in the early matches, Bradley McKeating of Calgary, Alberta secured a pivotal ½ point in match 6 taking Lewis Ballantyne of Scotland down to the last hole. The two players battled all day with each player finding themselves 3 up at one point in the match but finished all square.
Boys 15-19
In match 9 Matthew Kettleson defeated Scotsman Sam Nicholson 3 & 2 to give Canada 20 points in the tournament edging them closer to victory. Nicholson who was 4 down through 8 holes cut into the Canadian winning holes 9, 10 and 11 but Kettleson proved to be too much capitalizing on his opponents mistakes and claiming his match on hole 16.
With only two matches to go Jacob Hayes of Delta, BC secured the final point needed to retain the cup by defeating Scotsman Steven Paterson 5 & 3. It was an outstanding performance for Hayes who was 3 under par through 15 holes including 5 birdies.
With the score now 21 to 20, CJGA Team Canada playing captain Jacob Scarrow found himself 1 down to Scotsman Niall McMullan standing on the 18th tee. Heading to the green Scarrow needed to convert his 25 foot birdie putt for the outright win but it was not to be and both players tap in for par.
“Our team played great this week and had a lot of fun in this brilliant country” said an elated Brad Kinvig, Non Playing Captain for CJGA Team Canada. “Our team worked hard at training camp preparing for the competition. I’m proud of the way the team performed today. It’s was an unforgettable week here in Scotland.”
About the Euro Junior Golf Cup
Formerly known as the World Junior Golf Cup, the Euro Junior Golf Cup was developed in 1998 and is held in Fife, Scotland every year. Popular among juniors across North America and Scotland, the Euro Junior Golf Cup provides junior golfers with an opportunity to re-visit golf’s history and maybe make some of their own. Three countries participate each year – Canada, represented by the Canadian Junior Golf Association, the United States, represented by the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT), and Scotland represented by the Fife Golf Union States. The tournament takes on a unique format with the three teams competing in singles matches over three days to determine a winner for the John Clark Trophy.
