Richmond Hill, ON (July 29, 2015)- As players readied for the Round of 16 in the CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship, the hopes of upsets were high for underdogs. However, morning matches were dominated by top seeds, as fast conditions and tough pins at Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Brooklin, ON demanded precision golf.

In the Boys 14 & Under division, all seven morning matches were won by the top seed. In the closest match of the morning, eighth seed Eric Byun of Richmond Hill, ON defeated Parker Lee of Oro Medonte, ON on the 18th hole, to take the match 1up.

The Boys 15-19 division provided the only upset of the morning, with sixteenth seed Ryan Trapp of Janetville, ON defeating the number one seed John Burghardt by a score of 2&1. The division had three matches reach the 18th hole, two finishing with 2 up victories and the final match finishing 1 up.

The afternoon quarter final matches produced a larger number of upsets, the most shocking being eighth IMG_2606seed in the Boys 14 & Under division William Duquette defeating top seed Johnny Travale 1up on the 18th hole. Travale was coming off a second round 65 to earn the top seed going in the match play, and earned a bye through the morning round of 16. In another surprising upset, seventh seed Freddy D’Angelo defeated second seed Sudarshan Yellamaraju by a score of 3&1.

IMG_2678The Boys 15-19 division produced the afternoon’s closest match, with Matthew Anderson of Mississauga, ON defeating Ryan Trapp of Janetville, ON on the 20thhole of the match. Anderson was able to extend the match by making a 15 foot par putt on the 18th green to avoid losing the hole. Three of the division’s matches made it to the final hole, with the fourth match making it to the 17th.

IMG_2729The Girls 15-19 division quarter finals featured byes for the two top seeds, and two matches. Fifth seed Sonia Nagindas of Aurora, ON defeated fourth seed Danielle Sawyer of Grafton, ON 1 up on the 18th hole to earn a spot in the semi-final against top seed Sydney Naro. In the other match, third Sydney Lia of Timmins, ON defeated sixth seed Kelsey Fuchs of Uxbridge, ON by a score of 5&3. Lia will play second seed Delana Basanisi in Thursday morning’s semi-final.

The Girls 14 & Under division also featured two quarter final byes for top seeds. In the first match, fourth Claire Hwang of Maple, ON defeated Mackenzie Morrison of Etobicoke, ON 4&2 to earn a semi-final match against top seed Sophie Kim. The second match between Vaijayanti Bharkhada of Brampton, ON and Alisa Berindea of Richmond Hill, ON went the distance, with Bharkhada winning 2 up on the 18thhole. She will now play Victoria Zheng of Markham, ON in the semi-final.
