Tayport, Scotland (July 29, 2015) – Cloudy skies and warm temperatures welcomed junior golfers from Scotland and Canada today at the first round of the 11th annual Euro Junior Golf Cup held at Scotscraig Golf Club. It was a slow start for Canada but a late rally keep them in the match and both teams finished the round all square with 7 points a side.
Boys 15-19
Canada’s first point of the day came from reigning BC Junior Champion, Jake Scarrow of Dewdney, BC after defeating Scotsman Ryan Thompson 7 & 6. With 4 birdies on the day Scarrow secured an early point in the 2nd match of the day.
Canada had to wait until match 6 before it got its next point from Jacob Hayes of Delta, BC who won 2 & 1 over Scotsman Ben McKay. Down 2 after 7 holes Hayes continued to grind and won holes 8 and 9 to go all square before heading into the back nine. With a par on hole 15 to go 2 up over his opponent, Hayes played conservative off the 16th and 17th tees but aggressive on his approach shots to secure the victory.
Boys 14 & Under
Leading the younger boys on the course was Carter Graft of Red Deer, Alberta in Match 9. With the match swinging back and forth for the first four holes Graft took the lead on hole five and never looked back. Capitalizing on his opponent’s mistakes on holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 Graft claimed a point for Canada with a 5 & 4 victory.
Tristian Renaud of Sudbury, Ontario also made his contribution to Canada’s point total by claiming victory in match 12 winning 8 & 6. With 11 pars and 1 birdie on the day Renaud made short work over his Scottish counterpart.
Girls
Scotland found themselves shorthanded as a late withdrawal forced the lone Scottish girl to face off against two veterans Canadians. Despite a strong performance by 11 year Anna McKay of Scotland, Emilie Tyndall and Lili Klekner-Alt proved too much and secured the final two points for Canada on the day.
Overall it was a gutsy performance by Canada who never saw the course coming into today’s round. “We knew we would have a disadvantage and that the Scots would be a tough opponent, I’m pleased with how the team perform today” said CJGA Team Canada Coach, Brad Kinvig. “There were a lot of close matches out there and we played tough. I’m confident we will build on that tomorrow at Leven.”
Second round matches will continue tomorrow at Leven Links starting at 11:00am local time. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
