Richmond Hill, ON (July 27, 2015)- Perfect weather greeted golfers this morning for round one of the CJGA Ping Canadian Junior Match Play Championship at Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Whitby, ON. Players are competing in stroke play for the first two rounds, attempting to gain the top seeds’ in their respective match play brackets for the playoff rounds.
In the Boys 15-19 division, John Burghardt of Oakville, ON and Mitchell MacLeod of Oro-Medonte, ON share the opening round lead after posting scores of 1-under par 71’s. Burghardt’s round consisted of five birdies and four bogeys, with an impressive bogey free 33 on the back nine, which was Burghart’s first 9 of the day. MacLeod also posted a clean scorecard, with 4 birdies and 3 bogeys on the day. There are 16 spots available in Wednesday’s playoff round, and with two shots separating 13th to 21st place, round two will be a battle for the final spots in the bracket.
The Boys 14 & Under division also has a tie at the top after round one, with Eric Byun of Richmond Hill, ON and Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, ON posting opening round scores of 1-over par 73’s. Byun’s round was lifted by a string of three straight birdies from holes 8-10. Yellamaraju’s round started rough, bogeying the first three holes, but he battled back to play the remaining 15 holes in 2-under par to grab a share of the day one lead. These golfer’s are playing for a first round bye in the playoff round, which will be vital as players have two days of 36-holes on Wednesday and Thursday.
With two first round bye’s available in the Girls 15-19 division, Delana Basanisi of Mississauga, ON and Danielle Sawyer of Grafton, ON separated themselves from the field with opening rounds of 75, good enough to be four shots clear of the field. Basanisi’s round featured birdies on the tough par 3 11th and 17th holes, which lead to a back 9 score of 37. Sawyer’s round also had 2 birdies, and a closing 9 score of 37.
In the Girls 14 & Under division, Sophie Kim of Toronto, ON took the opening round lead with an 88. This score was good enough for a three shot lead over Vaijayanti Bharkhada of Brampton, ON and Victoria Zheng of Markham, ON. These girls are also playing for 2 first round bye’s, and with only five shots separating 1st and 4th place, round two leaves a lot to decide.
