CJGA Team Canada takes a slight lead heading into tomorrow’s foursome matches, finishing the first day with 4 points to the Americans 3.
Canadians Katelyn McMahon and Emilie Tyndall opened the scoring for the home team defeating American Gillian Alexander 3&2. Battling hard through the round, the Canadians were able to stave off the gritty Alexander to close out the match on 17.
“I am pleased with the start we had today” said CJGA Team Canada manager Akash Patel. It was great competition and all the matches were highly contested. I know our kids were eager to get play underway, so it was nice to see them get off to a good start and we will look to build upon that tomorrow.”
The boy’s matches were highly contested as no match fell short of making it to the 17th hole. Alternating country flags on the score board, both sides picked up 3 points each out of the six boys matches.
“It was a lot of fun seeing the kids compete today and all the matches go back and forth” said Team USA non-playing captain Chris Schramm. “I am very happy with how our team showed up today and competed. Watching them celebrate is fun to watch and an exciting part of this event. I know it will be a couple of great days ahead.”
Weston Golf & Country Club, celebrating their 100 year anniversary this year is hosting the event for the seventh time. From its humble beginnings as a four hole golf course begun by four friends in 1909, on the east bank of the Humber River in the small town of Weston, the Weston Golf & Country Club has grown into one of the premiere golf courses in Canada. Weston has hosted many prominent events both in golf and curling. The Canadian Open was held in 1955 with a young Arnold Palmer winning his first tour victory and setting a record that held for many years as the lowest score in Open history.
The North America Cup continues tomorrow with seven foursome matches, beginning at 8:00am. The first team to reach 14 ½ points will win the North America Cup. IJGT Team USA leads the overall series 9-3.
