Chilliwack, B.C. – Mitchell Thiessen, was the overnight leader at the Canadian Junior Golf Association tournament with a score of 73. As a former CJGA tournament winner Thiessen had his eyes set on the title. That was good for Thiessen’s mindset while playing his home course but there was another player in the hunt with the same game plan.

Starting the final round off at Chilliwack Golf Course is Zaahidali Nathu, Tanvir Kahlon and Christopher Dale as they were all tied for second-place with an opening score of 75.

When Thiessen faltered coming out of the gate, Nathu took control with a birdie on the first hole and never relinquished his lead. Nathu played a solid two-under par score of 70 which included two birdies and one eagle for a tournament score of 75-70-145.

Andy Fan from Vancouver, finished alone in second place with scores of 76-73-149. Chilliwack’s Thiessen finished third with scores of73-78-151 with Surrey’s Kahlon one back with 75-77-152.

“I was four under at one point.” described Nathu of his fine play in the final round.”I kept plodding along and played my game while the other guys took care of themselves. When I didn’t hit a good shot, I was able to rebound. I was able to keep that going right from the beginning.”

Girls 15 – 19

Euna Han from Coquitlam won her fourth CJGA title and second tournament victory of the month with rounds of 75-71-146 to edge challenger Jayla Kang by one stroke. Kang carded determined rounds of 77-72-147 and sole possession of second place. Richmond golfer Karen Zhang shot 79-81-160.

With the ever-present smile on her face Han admitted to playing ‘normal good’ adding the Chilliwack CJGA title to her win earlier in June at the BC High School AAA championship in Port Alberni, B.C.

Girls 14 & Under

Showing steady improvement all season, West Vancouver golfer Julie Ju won her second CJGA title carding scores of 77-75-152. Victoria’s Akari Hayashi claimed second place with scores of 81-82-162.

Boys 14 & Under

Fort Langley golfer Jacob Jackson added another trophy to his collection with a win in the CJGA Boys 14 & Under Division. Jackson opened with a two-over par 74 then closed with a solid two-under par round of 70 to finish at even-par 144.

“I was in much better control of my game in the second round,” beamed Jackson after the round. “I was four-under at one time the first day and then let it slip. Today was different. The first round I made a few aggressive decisions. I played a lot better today and knew where to put the ball and where to make the birdies.”

North Vancouver golfer Zach Ryujin had his best CJGA result with a second-place finish after carding rounds of 75-72-147. Victoria golfer Nolan Thoroughgood fired two consistent rounds earning a solid 74-74-148 total.
