Richmond Hill, ON (June 15, 2015) – This weekend at National Pines Golf Club, juniors faced wet and soggy conditions, forcing the tournament to be shortened to 27 holes. Despite this, spectators were treated to some great scores and all players battled valiantly for exemptions into the US Kids Teen World Championship and AJGA/CJGA Junior Championship. In the end, Carlito Reyes, Kelvin Lim, Emily Zhu, and Hailey McLaughlin were all triumphant.
Boys 15-19
Kelvin Lim of Thornhill, ON extended his winning streak to two events after beating the field at Greenhills Golf Club last weekend. Lim opened the tournament with a round of 70 (-2) to grab the first round lead. On day two, Lim shot a round of 38 (+2) and held on to claim a two-stroke victory. When asked what his mindset coming into this weekend was, Lim responded, “I wanted to come in and play smart rather then cautious and safe.” According to Lim the strongest aspect of his game this weekend was his ability to put the ball in the fairway. In a tie for second place was Sean Trapp of Janetville, ON and Mitchell MacLeod of Oro-Medonte, ON with totals of 110 (+2).
Girls 15-19
In the Girls 15-19 division, Hailey McLaughlin of Markham, ON bested the tough weather conditions and shot a winning total of 119 (+11). McLaughlin’s power and accuracy off the tee propelled her to victory. Highlighting her weekend was a near miss at a hole-in-one on the sixth hole, with her ball ending up within a foot of the pin. When asked about the win McLaughlin had this to say: “Even though it was a tough round with the rain, I’m happy to get my first win of the season in my first event!”
Boys 14 & Under
Playing in his first Junior Tour tournament, Carlito Reyes of Markham, ON continued his strong play this season by shooting a total of 111 (+3). With the soft and wet conditions, Reyes used an aggressive game plan on his approach shots and was able to come away with a three-stroke win over Freddy D’Angelo of Fonthill, ON. When asked how he felt about playing in his first junior event, Reyes responded with excitement, “I had so much fun, this was the first tournament where I was not allowed to have a caddie. I felt like I played really well. My approach shots and putting were my strongest points of the weekend.”
Girls 14 & Under
Emily Zhu of Richmond Hill, ON executed her game plan this weekend with precision. Her goal coming in was to minimize bogeys and take advantage of slow greens and that’s exactly what she did. Shooting a total of 123 (+15), Zhu continued her winning ways in the Girls 14 and Under division. Following close behind Zhu was Cindy Zhou of Niagara Falls, ON who shot a total of 126 (+18) over the weekend.
