May 31, 2015 (Richmond Hill, ON)- Golfers were welcomed to Northumberland Links today with rainy skies and chilly temperatures for the final MatthewChandlerround of the Nike Golf Junior Series at Northumberland, making for another tough day of scoring. Matthew Chandler of Chester, NS entered the final round with a 2 stroke lead in the Boys 15-19 division, and showed right off the bat that he came to play Sunday, opening the round with a birdie. Chandler maintained this play throughout his round for a 78 and a two shot victory over Calvin Ross.

“I really like how the course set up for me, I felt I was consistent across all aspects of my game this weekend” Chandler said after the round. The victory is his first on the CJGA, and it builds off his top 5 finish in the CJGA Cabot Links Junior Open last weekend.

MattWestMatt West of Bedford, NS relied on a strong putter in round 2 to fight off the pressure from John Mosher on route to a 3 stroke victory in the Boys 14 & Under division. Entering the 16th hole, Mosher had shrunk West’s lead to one shot, who was struggling with his driver. West dug down during the final three holes to finish three shots clear.

“It feels amazing to have my first CJGA victory, I hope I can build on this win later this year at the CJGA Atlantic Championship” West said when asked how he felt about the victory.

In the Girls 14 & Under Division, Heather McLean of Port Williams, NS relied on a strong driver to improve upon her first round, shooting an 87 on HeatherMcLeanSunday to solidify the win. This win marks back-to-back victories for McLean who also won at the CJGA Cabot Links Junior Open last weekend in Inverness, NS.

“I improved upon my overall play from last week, and hope that these two victories provide me with a stepping stone to strong play over the entire summer” McLean said while reliving her last two weeks.

LauraJonesIn the Girls 15-19 Division, Laura Jones of Moncton, NB came out firing with a front 9 score of 39 to gain the lead going into the back 9 on Sunday. Jones maintained her strong play on the back 9, emphasized with a birdie on the long par-4 13th, and finished with a round of 80, good enough for a two-stroke victory. Jones praised her ability to get up and down for trouble this weekend as her key to victory.
