Richmond Hill, ON (June 1, 2015) Junior golfers at the CJGA Junior at Glendale fought in tough against mother nature, only to have their tournament cut short to 27 holes. Conditions became unplayable in the second round of this past weekend’s tourney, but that did not stop the juniors from shooting some terrific rounds of golf. Cougar Collins, Johnny Travale, Eunice Hong, and Vaijayanti Bharkhada found victory in their respective divisions.
Boys 15-19
Cougar Collins of Caledon, ON, the first round leader after a 74 (+2) on Saturday, battled rainy and cold conditions to record his first career CJGA win at Glendale Golf and Country Club. The 14 year-old shot a 38 (+3) on his first nine on Sunday, for a 27-hole total of 113 (+5), after play was called due to unbearable rain and near freezing temperatures. While he may have struggled down the stretch on Sunday, his play was otherwise great. “I made a lot of putting saves that kept me going. Those putts that went in for me on both days is what gave me the opportunity to get the win” said Cougar after his win on Sunday. Collins knocked in a 10-foot birdie putt dead-center on the 9th hole Sunday, which turned out to be his last, propelling him to his one-stroke victory.
Peyton Callens of Langton, ON fell one shot short of Collins with a tournament total of 113 (+6), after an impressive 37 (+2) in the numbing conditions of Sunday’s second round.
Boys 14 & Under
The hometown-boy Johnny Travale found his way into the winner’s circle on Sunday, after shooting a tournament total of 118 (+11). The conditions on Sunday got the best of Johnny, as he struggled down the stretch. But the Hamilton, ON native was able to rely on his tournament-best score of 72 (E) on Saturday to get his win. Travale’s familiarity with the course helped him succeed this weekend. “It’s a tough course if you don’t know where to hit it. This is my home course, so I would say I had an advantage coming in,” said Johnny in regards to this weekend’s results. One of the highlights of his superb round on Saturday came on 18, where Travale nearly holed out for birdie, striking the flagstick from about 50 yards out in the fairway.
Robbie Latter of Mississauga, ON came runner-up in the Boys 14 & Under division, after posting a tournament total of 124 (+7). Latter’s weekend was highlighted by an impressive eagle on the par 5 8th hole at Glendale.
Girls 15-19
The Girls 15-19 division was won in wire-to-wire fashion by Eunice Hong of Thornhill, ON, who shot a tournament score of 127 (+20). Eunice’s first round score of 81 (+9), thanks to three birdies on her first 12 holes, gave her an eight-shot lead heading into Sunday. Her score of 46 (+11) in the brutal conditions of Sunday led her to victory at Glendale Golf and Country Club. This is Eunice’s first win on the CJGA schedule this season in as many events. With her victory, Hong earns a spot in the CJGA Mizuno National Junior Golf Championship, a tournament she placed 2nd in last season.
Following Hong was Emilie Tyndall of Kirkland, QC, who shot a strong, division-best round 42 (+8) on Sunday to record a tournament total of 131 (+24).
Girls 14 and Under
In the Girls 14 and under division, Vaijayanti Bharkhada of Brampton, ON finished in first-place with a tournament total of 149 (+42). After finishing runner-up twice and in 3rd place another two times so far this season, Vaijayanti was able to break through and battle the fierce weather conditions to get her first career CJGA Junior Tour victory. Bharkhada will look to build on her success in a couple weeks, where she will compete in the CJGA Junior at National Pines on June 13 and 14.
The CJGA Junior Tour’s next stop comes June 6th and 7th in London, ON with the CJGA Junior at Greenhills Golf Club.
