Calgary, AB (May 11, 2015) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association kicked off its Alberta schedule this past weekend with the Nike Golf Junior Series at River Spirt Golf Club in Calgary. Under clear skies and cool temperatures Kai Iguchi, Alex Smith, Annabelle Ackroyd and Abigail Hartzler captured their respective divisional titles and exemptions into the final Nike Golf Junior Championship.

Boys 14 & under

kaiKai Iguchi of Banff, AB broke the CJGA records books by winning the eight playoff hole to capture his first CJGA title of the season. With only two shots separating the leader from 4th place Kai recognized the competition was tough. “I’m happy with the win today. It was close and the playoff was lengthy’ said Kai.

After birding the 18th hole to get into the playoff Kai found himself in a tough spot on the first playoff hole with runner up Carter Grafter of Red Deer, AB needing just a tap to win. But it was not to be as Graft missed the short one footer. Both Iguchi and Graft finished with a tournament total of 157 (+13).

One shot back in third place was Jakob Chicoyne of Calgary, AB shooting two rounds of 79 for a tournament total of 158 (+14)

Boys 15-19Smith

Alexander Smith of Calgary, AB also made some headlines yesterday with a remarkable final round score of 68 (-4) and tournament total of 141 (-3) to capture his first career CJGA title. With only a two shot lead heading into the final round Smith played mostly defensive. “I didn’t want to get into any crazy spots where I couldn’t get up and down” said Smith in the clubhouse.

Smith will now turn his focus to finishing well at the Alberta Junior to be conducted at Henderson Lake Golf Club in early July.

Finishing in tie for the runner up position was Owen Murray and Alex Corrigan both of Calgary with a tournament total of 155 (+11)

GirlsfAckroyd

Annabelle Ackroyd of Calgary, AB captured the Girls 15-19 division with two rounds of 85 for a tournament total of 170. “I didn’t play as good as I hoped but the conditions were tough” said Ackroyd.

In the Girls 14 & Under Abigail Hartzler of Carstairs, AB collected her first hardware of the season beating Andrea Velasquez of Calgary, AB. “My putting saved me a bunch of times as my drives got me into some trouble” said Hartzler.Hartzler

The next CJGA Junior Tour event is May 23-24 at Henderson Lake Golf Club where juniors will compete for exemptions into the IMG Academy Junior Golf World Championships.
