Demanding Weekend at Cherry Downs Concludes with Exciting Finishes

Pickering, ON (May 24, 2015) – This weekend at Cherry Downs Golf Club was extremely busy, with players competing in both the Nike Golf Junior Series and CJGA Linkster Club Series. Players were welcomed with warm weather and sunny skies, however the course proved to be very challenging. Overall, it was a great weekend for spectators and players alike.

Boys 8 & Under

IMG_0520Capturing the Boys 8 & Under division tittle was Matthew Simpson of Toronto, ON. Taking the lead with a final score of 43 (+10), Matthew finished with a 5 stroke lead. With a strong start, Matthew stayed steady throughout. Close behind, with a final score of 48 (+15) was Ekveer Minhas of Pierrefonds, QC. S

 

Girls 9 & Under

Taking the lead with a final score of 45 (+12) was Michelle Ding. Nine-year-old MichelleIMG_0527of Toronto,ON had a strong start on the first hole meeting par. Michelle overall had a great game and proved to be a strong player.

Close behind, was Bridget Wilkie with a final score of 49 (+16). Eight-year-old Bridget of Toronto, ON played well on the nine hole course and is currently registered for the upcoming CHGA Linkster Ontario Series event at Greenhills.

Boys 9-10

Kevin Lee of Markham, ON and Luca Cimoroni Toronto, ON battled it out in a playoff, where Lee won the playoff over Cimoroni after one playoff hole. They tied with a score of 36(+5). Lee showed his strengths in his short game during the playoff to show why he deserved to win this weekends CJGA Linkster event.

 

 

Girls 10-13

Alissa Xu of Richmond Hill, ON performed well against a strong field of contenders,with a final score of 35(+4) Xu was able to win her first tournament of the season show that she is going to be a strong contender for the rest of the season

 

Boys 11-13

Brendan Chan of MaIMG_0513rkham, ON and Zander Gibson of Milton, ON also battled it out in a playoff with their playoff having to go two holes, with Chan taking winning after the second hole and winning his first CJGA tournament of the season. Both boys finished with a score of 35(+7) to just outplay Justin Lee who made it close in the last couple holes.

 

 

Boys 15-19

DSC00341Starting the day with a two shot lead, Matthew Vihant of Toronto, ON closed with a score of 77 (+6) and posted a total of 152 to win the Boys 15-19 division by five strokes. “Coming into today, I just wanted to play consistently, “ said Vihant. “Hitting greens was going to keep my game consistent, and I think I accomplished that today.” Vihant now has three wins on the season, and looks to continue his strong play at the CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match Play Championship and CJGA Mizuno National Junior Golf Championship later this summer.

 

Girls 15-19

DSC00355Like the boys division, the Girls 15-19 division also saw a wire-to-wire winner. Kelsey Fuchs of Uxbridge, ON was able to hold onto her lead and posted a winning total of 171. “The course and the conditions were tough, and that made the course not easy to play,” said Fuchs. “I felt like I played well, and am very happy about my first CJGA win.”

 

Boys 14 & Under

The Boys 14 & Under division was very closely contested. Dee Xie of Toronto, ON was able to shoot a final round 72 (+1), and a total of 151 to come away with the victory. “I performed nicely today,” said an excited Dee Xie. “The competition electric, and everyone in the final group wanted to put themselves in a position to win today.” Following closely behind Xie was Tristan Renaud of Sudbury, ON who posted a total of 153.

Girls 14 & Under

Perhaps the most exciting division to watch was the Girls 14 & Under division as two players battled it out for first place. Emily Zhu of Richmond Hill, ON and Sarah Beqaj of Toronto, ON were tied with a two-round total of 171. On the first playoff hole, Sarah Beqaj narrowly missed a six-foot putt to extend the playoff. “I liked the course a lot, and it did not seem too tricky to me!” said an ecstatic Zhu.
