Day Two Yields Higher Scores at Mizuno National Junior Championship
Richmond Hill, ON (August 11, 2015)- After day one of the CJGA Mizuno National Junior Championship, low scores and soft conditions gave golfers hope for Tuesday’s second round. Instead, golfers were met with a golf course that played significantly longer, with greens maintaining their quick pace, which lead to higher scores on day two.
The Boys 15-19 division has a logjam atop the leader board after round two, with four golfers sharing a piece of the lead at 1-under par for the tournament. Gray Potter of Halton Hills, ON made the biggest move up the leaderboard, firing a second round 3-under par 69 to move him from T19 to a share of the lead. Nicholas Brisebois of Kanata, ON and Sean Trapp of Janetville, ON posted the only other under par rounds of the day, firing a 2-under par 70 and 1-under par 71 respectively to have a share going into round three. Kelvin Young Woong Lim of Thornill, ON shot a 2-over par round of 74 to bring him back to 1-under par for the tournament, but it was good enough move him from second place to tied for the lead headed into the final two rounds.
After opening her tournament with a 2-under par 70, Grace St-Germain of Orleans, ON was able to repeat the score on Tuesday and grab a commanding lead heading into round three. Her tournament total of 4-under par gives her a ten stroke lead in the Girls 15-19 division over Emily Chu of Ancaster, ON and Kenna Hughes of Calgary, AB. St-Germain’s round featured three birdies in four holes between the 5th and 8th, and a lone bogey on the 17th.
The long course conditions reeked havoc on the Boys 14 & Under division, forcing many more long irons into the greens and higher scores. First round leader Jack Sue of Richmond Hill, ON was able to maintain a share of the lead going into round three after posting a 7-over par 79. Sue is joined atop the leaderboard with Sean Buckles of Vancouver, BC whose second round 3-over par 75 puts him tied at 6-over par for going into round three.
Cindy Zhou of Niagara Falls, ON holds the lead in the Girls 14 & Under division with a two day total of 18-over par.
