CJGA Team Canada Takes Early Lead at the Canadian International Junior Challenge

Douro-Dummer, Ont. (September 13, 2016) – The Canadian International Junior Challenge (CIJC) officially kicked off this morning at the Wildfire Golf Club. The Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) Team Canada, emerged as the early leader after round 1 of the competition. Team England, the six-time champions of the CIJC, currently sit two strokes behind CJGA Team Canada, in second place. The USA rounds out the top three, while Colombia, Mexico and Costa Rica take the 4th, 5th, and 6th spots respectively.

CJGA Team Canada’s Max Sekulic, from Rycroft, AB, emerged as the individual leader after round one. Sekulic was able to maintain the lead over his competitors, making three birdies and shooting his way to finish with a score of 71 (-1). Following closely behind, were Sekulic’s Canadian teammate Keaton Gudz, of Victoria, BC and Luca Martinez from the USA. Both boys finished the round at even par. CJGA Team Canada’s Thomas Giroux, of Georgetown, ON and Ty Celone, of Long Sault, ON struggled to stay on top of the leaderboard, with Giroux finishing round one at 76 (+4), and Celone posting a score of 80 (+8).

First round team totals were as follows: Canada 219, England 221, USA 224, Colombia 233, Mexico 234, and Costa Rica 238. With scores being so close and a lot of golf left to play this tournament is still anybody’s for the taking. Round two will kick off tomorrow at 8:30 am.
