WELLAND ONTARIO – AUGUST 30, 2019 – The 2019 CJGA Mizuno Canadian National Junior Championship came to its conclusion on Friday evening with four new National Champions being named. Ella Weber (U19 Girls), Bavake Sihota (U19 Boys), Kevin Lee (U15 Boys) and Lauren Gervais (U15 Girls) were all able to hoist the Mizuno Trophy following four days of intense competition at the Cardinal Lakes Golf Club in Welland, Ontario.

In the Junior Girl’s Division, Ella Weber from Burlington, Ontario had the best final round of the tournament, firing a one-under-par (71) on Friday to trumpet up the leaderboard and into an eventual tie with the third-round leader and defending Mizuno National Champion Sarah Gallagher. Weber would go on to defeat Gallagher in a play-off to claim her first National Championship and fourth CJGA Championship title and rob Gallagher of a threepeat.

Gallagher (Burlington, ON), who held the tournament lead through the first three days of competition was looking to make history by claiming 2019 her third straight Mizuno National Championship title, having claimed the 2018 Junior Girls division title and the 2017 Bantam Girls division title, however despite firing a solid six-over-par (78) on Friday she was unable to hold off the charging Weber who’s game seemed to peek at just the right time.

Third place in the Junior Girls division went to Milton, Ontario’s Roslyn Rooke who finished 8 shots back of Gallagher and Weber at 320 (+32).

In the Junior Boy’s Division, Caledon, Ontario’s Bavake Sihota put the final touches on a stellar week of play, closing Friday’s Final Round with an even-par (72) to claim the Mizuno National Championship by an astounding 10 shots over Alexis Valenzuela (Bahamas). Sihota came out of the gate firing on Tuesday with an opening round 67 and continued his consistent play throughout the week, never shooting higher than two-over par during the tournament.

Playing in his first Mizuno National Championship, Valenzuela stayed consistent throughout the week firing rounds of 75-76-73-72 for a four-day total of 296 (+8), but in the end Bavake’s early lead proved too much to overcome. Rounding out the top three in the Junior Boy’s Division was Kavith Ranchagoda (Richmond Hill, ON) at 299 (+11)

In the Bantam Boy’s Division, Markham Ontario’s Kevin Lee held on to claim his first Mizuno National Junior Championship title, despite closing with a final round 80 to go with his first three rounds of 74-75-72. His four-round total of 301 (+13) was enough to give him a five-shot margin of victory over Mathew Whitehead (Cambridge, ON) who finished in solo second at 307 (+19). Smithville, Ontario’s Isaiah Ellis finished just one shot back at 308 (+20) to take third place.

In the Bantam Girl’s (U15) Division, Nepean Ontario’s Lauren Gervais closed with a final round of five-over-par (77) to claim the tournament trophy by 9-shots at 314 (+26) over Joline Truong (Mississauga, ON) who finished at 323 (+35). Burlington, Ontario’s Emma Hansen took home third place finishing just one shot back of Truong at 324 (+36)

-Canadians Win Consecutive Cups for First Time in Event History –

Caledon, Ontario (July 26, 2019) – For the first time in the events seventeen-year history, the Canadian side made up of CJGA members captured back-to-back titles at the North America Cup. Needing just four points out of a possible twelve heading into today’s singles matches, CJGA Team Canada split the points evenly, 6-6, to capture the North America Cup by a score of 14.5 – 9.5.

The day off in the Americans favour as 5 of the first six matches started out with the American side up early on the front nine. That would not last however as the Canadian girls, Sarah Cumby and Yasmine Qureshi, settled in and were able to capture both matches and get two quick points on the board. They finished the event undefeated, capturing all four points available.

The Bantam Boys division were the second group out, facing a stiff test in their American counterparts. Canadians Nathan Szpakowicz and Tanner Cardwell played solid golf all week, falling just shy in the fourball and foursome formats on the 18th hole both days. Today ended in similar fashion, as American Jeep Patrick sunk a winning putt on the 18th hole for the third consecutive day to defeat Szpakowicz 1UP, while Nick Ciocca defeated Cardwell 5&3 to capture all four points for the American side in the Bantam Boys division.

“I am so happy for the players and the effort they put forth this week” stated an elated Ryan Shaw, CJGA Team Canada non-playing captain. “From the moment we came together at the residence, I could tell this group would be special. They bonded on and off the course, and I think that went a long way in them digging deep and playing for each other.”

The Junior Boys division were the last groups out, knowing somewhere in this group the Cup would be decided. After Logan Hawke defeated Alex Burnett in the sixth match, CJGA Team Canada was just one point away from hoisting the Cup for the second consecutive year. With many of the matches close heading to the back nine, it would be Ryan McAskill’s 5&4 victory over Chandler Brewer that would clinch the fourth and deciding point to keep the North America Cup in Canada for a second consecutive year.

“I know the memories and friendships created this week will last a long-time” stated Shaw. “It has been a tremendous week and cannot thank TPC Toronto, the juniors from both sides, and CJGA staff for such an amazing experience and opportunity.”

-Canadians Head into Singles Matches Needing Four Points to Win Cup-

Caledon, Ontario (July 25, 2019) – As the hot summer sun beat down on the juniors from both Canada and the United States, CJGA Team Canada expanded their lead over IJGT Team USA following the second day of the North America Cup at TPC Toronto. Competing in foursome matches, the Canadian side increased their lead to five after a 3.5-2.5 score today, 8.5-3.5 overall.

Ryan McAskill and Tyler Cunningham were the first Canadians out facing off against Americans Steven Strasheim and Matthew Hicks. The match stayed tight throughout the front nine, with the Canadians finding themselves one down going to the back. Despite the best efforts of McAskill and Cunningham, they were unable to find their best game on the day, as the Americans were able to pull away on the back nine, ending the match at 4 & 3 on the fifteenth hole.

The Alberta pairing of Cole Ruelling and Tayler Kurucz teed off in the second match of the day against Matthew Hicks and Tyden Wilson. This was a closely fought match all round, and heading into the seventeenth hole, the two teams were all square. After a long tee shot by Ruelling, Kurucz hit a tremendous approach shot, which allowed the Canadians to par the hole and take a one-hole lead heading onto the last hole. However, Hicks and Wilson had a strong eighteenth hole and were able to pull the match back to all square, meaning the two teams each took half a point on the day.

Logan Hawke and Dayton Price were paired together for a second consecutive day and faced off against an American team of Jaden Wiesman and Chandler Brewer. After the front nine, the Canadians held a two-hole advantage, which they extended to a three-hole lead by the sixteenth hole meaning the match was dormie. On sixteen, Brisebois hit a great tee shot to the middle of the green, which allowed the boys to par the hole and finish the match at 3 & 2, extending Canada’s lead to 7-2 over the Americans.

Riley Mathieson and partner Alexander Brisebois were the final match of the Junior Boys division and drew Americans Alex Burnett and Mikee Ordona. Hawke and Price got off to a quick start, with a two-hole lead early on, after winning holes one and four. They went on to the back nine with a four-hole lead, after winning the ninth hole, and did not look back from there. The Canadians eventually finished the match on the thirteenth hole, making quick work of their opponents, and winning the match by a score of 7 & 5.

“Today was another solid day for the entire team and I’m really proud of how they played” stated Ryan Shaw, CJGA Team Canada non-playing captain. “It is easy to lose focus after building a lead like we did after round one, but the team was prepared and focused, and really played well. I am happy with our position heading into tomorrow’s singles matches and look forward to an exciting day of competition.”

The Bantam Boys were the fifth match out with CJGA Team Canada partners Tanner Cardwell and Nathan Szpakowicz battling Americans Jeep Patrick and Nick Ciocca. The Canadians were looking for revenge after losing a heartbreaker on the eighteenth hole in round one. Ironically, the match was all square on the eighteenth tee once again, giving the Canadians a chance for redemption. However, it was a feeling of déjà vu for the Canadians, as Jeep Patrick hit another fantastic putt on eighteen, sealing a win for the American Bantam Boys for the second day in a row.

The Girls Division rounded out the day two matches as Canadians Yasmine Qureshi and Sara Cumby were challenged by the US team of Kayleigh Zemen and Teagan Devoe. After struggling for much of the front and finding themselves one down through the nine, the Canadian girls fought back and took the match on the sixteenth hole by a score of 3 & 2. Yasmine hit an outstanding tee shot to give the Canadians the upper hand on the hole, and they were able to two-putt for par to seal the victory, making the ladies 2-0 in the tournament.

The North America Cup resumes tomorrow morning at 7:40am with singles matches. There are twelve points on the line tomorrow with CJGA Team Canada needed four points to win the North America Cup.

~Play completed late Friday evening following a two hour delay due to inclement weather~

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – JULY 5, 2019 – The final day of the 19th annual PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship was completed Friday evening. The players were forced to play through extreme heat and two delays due to inclement weather, as the weather was not on their side. This did not affect the quality of the competition on display though, as all four divisions put on a true spectacle.

The Junior Boys division, which was a tight battle all week, ended with Mathieu Lafontaine facing off in the final against Eric Yun. It was a great match-up which saw two evenly matched players at their best. In the end Lafontaine, was able to defeat Yun by a score of 5 & 3 leading to him being crowned champion in the Junior Boy’s division, after a long week. “Winning is a good feeling” he said, “I played a good match, he did too…I was two up after two, so I just played safe”.

In the Junior Girls division, after a pair of intense semi finals, Nicole Gal was able to defeat Megan Miron by a score of 5 & 4, and Vaijayanti Bharkhada earned her spot in the final by defeating the top seed Raesa Sheikh by a score of 3 & 2. This led to a hard-fought final match which saw the two girls fight through the high temperatures and humidity, as well as a significant weather delay which occurred as they prepared to hit their tee shots on 18th hole. After resuming play around 8:30 pm, Nicole Gal was able to claim victory and her place on the championship trophy on the 18th hole.

Chad Huber took first place in the Bantam Boys division Chad Huber with a well deserved 3 & 2 victory over the young phenom Eric Zhao. Huber and Zhao earned their places in the final with semi-final victories against Isaiah Ellis and Cameron Colbran earlier in the day respectively. After the match ended, Chad was asked about what he felt the turning point in the match was, responding “probably on 11, when I made the birdie putt to go three up, and I knew that I had a cushion and I could just match him to win.” Overall the Bantam Boys had a great turnout for their division, with many talented players putting on a show over the course of the week.

The Bantam Girls division also saw their final match delayed by the late afternoon thunderstorms in the Hamilton region. Playing in the final match Alexa Ouellet and Kelly Zhao squared off after they were able to defeat Mia Wong and Lauren Gervais respectively during their semi final matches. The girls were set-up to hit their approach shots into the par 5, 15th hole when play was suspended, leaving the match in limbo with Alexa sitting 3up over her opponent. The nearly 2 hour delay was not enough to nock Alexa’s mental game and once play resumed a birdie by Alexa awarded her the championship with a 4&3 victory.

Overall, the tournament was a great success, which saw many players bring their “A” game. Many spectators were thrilled to watch the outstanding golf that was on display, and it is safe to say many people will be looking forward to the 20th annual Ping Canadian Junior Matchplay Championship partnered by Tourism Hamilton, which will return to King’s Forest next summer.

~16 players remain with 8 matches across 4 divisions set to take place on Friday morning-

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – JULY 4, 2019 – The first round of match-play for the PING Canadian Junior Match-play Championship got underway this morning. It began with the round of 16 matches being played early in the morning to determine seeding for the quarter finals which took place in the afternoon. The players had to stay hydrated as it was extremely hot and sunny all day, meaning everybody had to be mentally strong in order to stay focused.

In the Junior Boys division Andrew Gwilliams (6) will face off against Eric Yun (10) after defeating Caden Holmes by a score of 2 & 1, to earn his spot in the semi-finals. He was able to come back from two down after two holes and says he will look to “hit as many fairways as possible, sink a few more putts, and see how it goes” tomorrow in order to get himself through to the final against a tough opponent in Eric Yun. In the other Semi-Final match, we will see Dayton Price (12) square off against Mathieu LaFontaine (9), who was able to defeat the number one seed in the division, Noah Campbell (1) in an outstanding performance.

Moving on to the Junior Girls, where the top eight seeds from Wednesday were able to go straight through to the quarter-finals meaning they each only had to play one round in the day. They kicked off in the afternoon at 2:00pm with Vaijayanti Bharkhada (4) facing off against Krystal Li (5) and eventually taking the match by a score of 6 & 5. Her opponent, Raesa Sheikh (1) was able to carry over her stellar performances from the stroke-play, which put her in the first seed, by beating Skylar Kew (8). She goes into the semi-finals as the favourite and going into day four her strategy is “definitely the same, making sure I’m swinging through the ball as hard as I can, and going aggressive on the lines that I choose.” The other match in the division will see Nicole Gal (2) and Megan Miron (3) compete, in what is sure to be an exciting and tight match-up. Nicole was able to secure her spot with a par on the eighteenth hole to earn her spot, after a neck and neck match against her close friend, Katie Cranston (7). The Junior Girls division saw all top four seeds qualify for the semi-finals, meaning it is sure to be an enthralling division to watch.

In the Bantam age division, the boys saw some amazing golf as everybody battled to get through to day four. The upset of the division saw Cameron Colbran (11) defeat Punn Chittaratlert (3) by a score of 5 & 3. Eric Zhao (7), the youngest player in the division, was also able to quietly make his way into the semi-finals and will face off against Colbran, as the two dark-horses of the division will battle to get a shot in the final. The winner of that match will play against either Isaiah Ellis (1), or Chad Huber (5) who face off at 8:10 AM. Isaiah was able to squeeze out a win against John Svalina (9) in a match described by Ellis’ dad as some of the “best golf I’ve seen in a while!”

Finally, in the Bantam Girls division, like the Junior Girls, saw all of the top four seeds in the division qualify for the semi-finals. The first match will kick off with Kelly Zhao (2) versus Lauren Gervais (3), in what is sure to be a neck and neck battle. Mia Wong (1), who put up one of the standout performances of the day and was able to win her match 7 & 5. She will face off against Alexa Ouellet (4), who is a fierce competitor and will not be scared to face-off against the division’s top seed.

~Rounds of 16 & 12 get Underway on Thursday Morning at Kings Forest~

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – JULY 3, 2019 – The second day of the PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship was completed today at King’s Forest Golf Club. After the first two days the stroke-play portion of the tournament has now ended, and the seeding for the match-play is now set in stone. It was an exciting day in every division with three out of four divisions needing a playoff to determine the final seedings.

Isaiah Ellis was able to hold on to his top spot that he held after day one with a total score of 149 through 36, and as a result will go into the match-play as the fist seed in the Bantam Boys division. He will face off against the twelfth seed Jared Lipski, who was able to defeat Kurt Rivers in a playoff match, securing his spot in day three. Rounding out the top 3 in the division are Kevin Lee and Mitchell Grey who shot 76 and 79 respectively and will be encouraged by a strong first two days. The round of 16 will be played early tomorrow morning to determine who will make it through to the quarter finals.

Over in the Bantam Girls division, there was some great competition to earn a spot in the final twelve. Mia Wong matched her 74 from round one, to put her at 148 through 36, earning herself top spot. Kelly Zhao, Lauren Gervais and Alexa Ouellet were also able to finish in the top four, in that order, to secure a bye into the quarter finals of the division. The remaining eight girls will play “win and you’re in” matches to earn a chance to take down the top four.

The Junior Boys division, which consisted of a remarkable 43 players, was hotly contested all weekend. In the end Noah Campbell was able to take top spot, beating out Ryan Hogan by one stroke, making him the one to watch heading into day three. Campbell will face off against Jake McBride, who was able to defeat both Bradyn Wark and James Bader in a three-person playoff. McBride was asked about his strategy going into a tough matchup against the top seed, saying he plans to “play conservative and play based off my competitor.” It looks to be an exciting day ahead in the Junior Boys division with tight matchups across the board.

Finally, in the Junior Girls division Raesa Sheikh was able to finish at eight over through 36 holes, to allow her to claim first seed heading into day three. The quarter finals will take pace beginning tomorrow afternoon with Raesa Sheikh, Nicole Gal, Megan Miron, and the rest of the top eight junior girls.

The stroke play portion of the tournament was a massive success, and now the match-play will ultimately decide who the champion of each division is. Tomorrow, the remaining players will each get there chance to earn a spot in the semi finals which will begin on Friday.

~Tight race forming as players via for place in Match Play brackets~

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – JULY 2, 2019 – The first round of the 2019 PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship commenced at Kings Forest Golf Club early Tuesday morning. Katie Cranston from the Junior Girls division got the tournament underway at 7:30am as the next 94 players continued to tee off until 9:40am. The players battled some light rain as they competed in the first half of the 36-hole stroke play competition with a goal of qualifying for the match play portion, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday, to ultimately determine the champions of each division.

Isaiah Ellis of the Bantam Boys division put himself in a strong position heading into day two, after shooting a division-best 72, putting him at even par after the first round. Closely behind him was Punn Chittaratlert who had a strong back nine putting him at one over, to keep the pressure on Isaiah heading into day two of stroke play. Cameron Colbran, a dark horse for round two, plans on trying to “Play his game tomorrow, not get carried away, and not worry about how the other people are playing” as he looks to secure his spot in the top twelve after a strong first round.

Over in the Bantam Girls division, Mia Wong and Lauren Gervais finished day one in pole position to qualify for the match-play potion of the tournament tied at the top of the leaderboard with a score of 74. Wong credited her mental strength saying tomorrow her goal is to “Stay focused, take it one step at a time and not get too far ahead of herself.” The Bantam Girls division will be a battle to the end, with eighteen players fighting to be in the top twelve.

The Junior Boys division was a tightly contested battle all day long, with a tie for first between Mathieu Lafontaine and Noah Campbell, who both shot 72 to put them at even par going into day two. Lafontaine and Campbell hold the advantage mid-way through, however with four golfers within just two shots of them, there is still everything to play for tomorrow.

Finally, in the Junior Girls division it was a successful first day for Raesa Sheikh who’s score of 75 puts her at the top of the standings. Sheikh credited her birdie on hole eighteen for helping to power her to the top, saying “Eighteen was a tough, tough hole, especially playing in to the wind…so it really helped!”

The first day of the tournament was exciting, with some tremendous golf on display in all four divisions. The highlight of the day was on the fifth hole, when Matthew McRae hit a hole-in-one. “It felt pretty good.” McRae said, “I thought, you know I’ll hit a little punch 5 iron, and then I got pretty good contact, one good bounce, and it trickled over to the hole and disappeared!” He and the rest of the golfers will be looking to be at their best tomorrow morning for the second round of stroke play to secure their spot in the match-play portion of the tournament.

Round two gets underway tomorrow morning at 7:30 am

North York, ON (May 31, 2019) – The field is set for the Humber College PGM CJGA Ontario Junior Open for the weekend. A full field of 90 juniors from across Ontario will compete on TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley’s North course in Caledon, Ontario Saturday and Sunday.

Competing in Junior and Bantam Boys & Girls divisions, juniors will be competing for coveted spots in the North America Cup which takes place July 23-26, 2019 at TPC Toronto on the Heathlands course.

A parkland-style layout that welcomes players with generous landing areas and naturally rolling fairways, the North course, formerly named Toot, offers golfers of all abilities a delightful experience from start to finish.

While its width off the tee may be benevolent, deep greenside bunkers and undulating putting surfaces put a premium on approaching pins from the right angles, providing a challenge that rewards good shots but tests those who get out of position.

The North course plays host annually to the Osprey Valley Open, an official event on the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada, where some of the world’s top up-and-coming players compete to advance their careers closer to the PGA TOUR.

North York, ON (May 10, 2019) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) is pleased to officially announce that the King’s Forest Golf Club in Hamilton, Ontario will be the host venue for the CJGA PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship beginning in 2019. The historic venue will play host to the championship July 2-5, 2019 and it will remain at King’s Forest thru 2021 as part of an extended partnership between Tourism Hamilton and the CJGA.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship to the City of Hamilton and the King’s Forest Golf Club” said Reegan Price, Director of Tournament Operations for the CJGA.

“King’s Forest is easily one of the best and most challenging golf courses in South Western Ontario and we look forward to having an elite field of top junior golfers from across Canada and the region compete on its fairways. We would like to thank both the City of Hamilton and Tourism Hamilton for their support in partnering with us to bring the Championship to Hamilton and we look forward to working with them over the next three seasons.”

“We are very proud to partner with the Canadian Junior Golf Association to bring the PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship to Hamilton in 2019, 2020 and 2021. We look forward to extending a warm Hamilton welcome to participants from across Canada.” Said Sharon Murphy, Acting Manager of Tourism & Events, Tourism and Culture Division, City of Hamilton.

The PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship is one of two National Championships conducted by the CJGA each season and is the only national Match-Play Championship for Junior age players in Canada. The competition will consist of between 80 & 100 players from age 12 – 18 who will compete across 4 separate divisions for Boys & Girls. The first two days will consist of a 36-hole stroke play competition to determine seeding followed by up to four rounds of Match-Play.

Stated PING Canada General Manager Dave Wilson, “In 2001, the CJGA approached PING about this unique medal and match play event and we have been committed to this event since then. The idea that junior golfers would be able to play in a competitive environment with players from all over Canada was something that we knew would leave a lasting impression and the concept aligned well with our goal to support the growth of the game through junior initiatives. We believe the CJGA provides some of the best opportunities for competitive golf in Canada and can shape the lives of all participants both on and off the golf course.”
