Alward Goes Low Take Early Lead at the Eastern Junior Championship presented by TaylorMade.
Hong, Somerville & Yu lead Junior Girls, Bantam Boys & Bantam Girls Divisions
Georgetown, ON (August 7, 2018) – Wasaga Beach, Ontario’s Jack Alward showed strong focus today en route to posting an opening round five-under-par (66) to take an early lead in the Junior Boys (U19) division at the CJGA’s Eastern Junior Championship presented by TaylorMade.
Playing for only his second time at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Georgtown, Ontario, the 16 year old showed great composure on the challenging par 71 layout that carves itself through the forested hills & valleys of the North Halton region. When asked what his game plan was for round one Alward said he kept it pretty simple.
“I just wanted to focus on hitting greens in regulation and giving myself as many looks at birdie as possible.”
The simple strategy seemed to pan out as he carded four birdies on his front nine to go out in four-under-par. After paring the difficult 10th hole he would make another birdie at 11 to get to five-under, an additional two birdies on the back nine to go with two bogies would see him close with a 66, enough for a 4 stroke lead in his division.
Conditions in round one were near perfect for scoring with very little wind and warm temperatures. The heavy rain storm that pounded the region on Monday lead to soft & receptive greens for the players. Angelo Giantsopoulos shot a two-under-par (69) in round one to sit just 3 back. Nicholas Adair (Kingston, ON) carded a one-under-par (70) to sit in solo third after the opening round.
In the Junior Girls (U19) division, Maggie Hong (Lorraine, QC) carded an opening round 81 to hold a two-shot-lead over Erin Kim (Toronto, ON) and 5 shots ahead Calista Zeng (Maple, ON).
Aurora, Ontario’s Ryan Somerville carded an opening round of even-par (71) to take the lead by four shots in the Bantam Boys (U15) Division over Landon Underhill & Annie Wanying Yu currently holds the lead in the Bantam Girls (U15) Division after an opening round 78.
Round two of the Eastern Canadian Junior Championship presented by TaylorMade will be played tomorrow with tee-times starting at 7:30 am.
