-Strong winds and frigid temperatures not enough to slow eager juniors-
Hamilton, Ont. (April 19, 2015) – The difference a day makes was all the talk around Willow Valley Golf Course on Sunday as juniors returned to the Hamilton area golf course for the final round of the CJGA Ontario Season Opener. After juniors were greeted with warm spring like conditions on Saturday, Sunday was quite the opposite as cold air mixed with a wind that blew over 30m/h much of the day made it feel more like winter was back.
“The conditions on Sunday were some of the most challenging I have ever seen juniors compete in” said Tournament Director Brad Parkins. “The juniors and their parents, who also braved the cold to support their kids, are to be commended for their effort and their enthusiasm despite the uncooperative weather conditions.”
Boys 14 & Under
Entering the final round in a tie for the lead, Windsor, Ont. resident Shawn Sehra was able to make enough shots to capture the season opening event by two strokes. Sehra opened the tournament with a round of 75 (+3) for a share of the lead and closed with an 80 (+8) in the challenging final round conditions for a 155 (+11) total.
Brampton resident Kyle Chung finished runner-up. Chung, tied after the first round with Sehra, closed the tournament with a final round 82 (+10) to fall just short.
Girls 14 & Under
Emily Romancew of Pierrefonds, Que. went wire-to-wire to capture her first division title of the season. Opening with a 76 (+4) and a three stroke first round lead, Romancew shot a final round 86 (+14) in the windy winter like conditions to capture the title.
Toronto resident Sarah Beqaj matched Romancew’s final round 86 to finish runner-up, three strokes back.
Boys 15-19
After an impressive first round 69 (-3), Toronto resident Zack Mason fired and equally impressive final round 78 (+6) to win his first title. Mason’s three over-par (147) two-day total gave the 16-year old a nine
shot margin of victory.
Oakville resident Andrew Russ matched Mason’s final round 78 (+6) to move into a tie for second place with a two-day total of 157 after opening with an 80 (+8). He finished runner-up alongside Brad Currier (75-83) and John Burghardt (75-83). All three players are members of the Glen Abbey Juniors program.
Girls 15-19
With her 15th birthday on Saturday, Sarah McLellan opened the new season working on her game in tournament conditions as the lone girl in the division. With one competitive event under her belt in 2015, she will look to use that to her advantage next event against her fellow-competitors.
