CJGA Team Canada Captures Inaugural Stephen Ames Cup

STOUFFVILLE, ON-The final round of the Stephen Ames Cup wrapped up on Saturday at the picturesque Granite Golf Club in Stouffville, Ont. amid ideal weather conditions. CJGA Team Canada captured the final round singles matches by a score of 4 ½ to 3 ½ to secure the Stephen Ames Cup for the Canadians in its inaugural year by a final score of 10 to 6.

“Both team learned a lot from this experience,” said Ames, who was in the crowds cheering for both team each day of the event. “They learned things you can’t be taught. Overall, everything went very well.”

“This was the best tournament I have ever played in,” said Trevor Edwards, the playing captain of CJGA Team Canada who won his final round singles match 2 and 1 over Shane Costelloe, the Trinidad & Tobago captain. “There’s so much I will take away from this experience.”

Trinidad & Tobago’s Simon Merry was victorious in his singles match 5 & 4 over Chase Osiowy of Calgary, Alta. “The course was the nicest I’ve ever played on,” he said. “It was an amazing feeling to represent my country.”

Despite the loss, there was nothing but smiling faces on the Trinidad & Tobago side at the conclusion of the event as they gained tremendous experiences and forged a number of relationships with the Canadians during their two week stay in Toronto. The event was about more than just competition, instead it was about creating a new relationship between two countries that is expected to extend well into the future.
